It’s Officially the End of an Era as Sony Discontinues Its Last 4K Blu-ray Player

Hannah covers horror, sci-fi, and games at Collider, where she writes news and features, reviews new releases, and interviews the people who make them. She’s helping build out Collider’s gaming coverage, with Pokémon as one of her specialties. If she isn’t writing about a monster, she’s probably watching one on a tape from her VHS collection.

For movie collectors, keeping a favorite on the shelf is only part of preserving access to it. There also needs to be a working player connected to the television, preferably with a replacement available when that hardware eventually fails. That makes the future of disc players an important part of the conversation about why physical media still matters.

Sony has long been a familiar name in that setup, offering dedicated movie players alongside its PlayStation consoles. For viewers who want to watch their 4K collections without buying gaming hardware, those standalone devices serve a specific purpose. Now, the company’s Japanese lineup has lost its final dedicated Ultra HD Blu-ray option.

Sony has discontinued the UBP-X700/K, its last standalone 4K Blu-ray player in Japan. As reported by FlatpanelsHD, Japanese retailer and blog Kunkoku identified the end of shipments, with sales ending October 22. Sony’s Japanese store also marks the model as no longer being restocked, and no successor has been announced. The change leaves PlayStation 5 consoles equipped with a disc drive as Sony’s remaining 4K Blu-ray playback option in Japan. It does not mean Sony has stopped selling every kind of disc player, as standard Blu-ray and DVD models remain. It also does not establish a worldwide withdrawal: The reporting notes that the model has not been officially discontinued across the United States and Europe.

🕵Angela Lopez(Alyssa Diaz)

01

How would your friends describe you? Be honest.

03

What would you be like as a training officer? One answer only.

04

How do you handle authority? Pick the closest answer.

05

Pick a shift. No wrong answers here.

06

What is your relationship with the rules? Pick the closest answer.

07

How do you handle a bad day at work? Think about the last one.

08

What do you want out of the job? Last one. This is the one that decides it.

Roll Call, Mid-Wilshire You Are…

The Rookie started as a show about a man starting over at forty-five and turned into a proper ensemble drama somewhere around season three. Here is which of them you are, and the case for yours being the best of the four.

John Nolan

You started late and you are not embarrassed about it. Nolan walks into the academy at forty-five surrounded by people half his age, and the show is honest that this is both his biggest disadvantage and the only reason he is any good at the job.

  • You are relentlessly decent, and people keep underestimating how far that gets you.
  • The series was inspired by William Norcross, who really did join the LAPD in his forties.
  • Nathan Fillion has played him for eight seasons and the show has outlasted most of what ABC launched alongside it.
  • Your flaw is wanting to solve the human problem when somebody just needs you to do the police work.

Lucy Chen

You are better at this than people expect and you intend to keep proving it. Chen goes from rookie to the best undercover officer in the division, which works because she is genuinely good at becoming somebody else and genuinely bad at pretending she does not care.

  • You are ambitious in a way that lifts the people around you rather than stepping over them.
  • Her undercover episodes are the ones the fandom rewatches, and the show knows it.
  • Chenford has carried more internet discourse than any other relationship on network television this decade.
  • Your risk is taking on the hardest version of every assignment just to see if you can.

Tim Bradford

You are hard on people because you have decided that is what caring looks like. Bradford is introduced as the worst training officer in the building and slowly revealed as the one who takes the job most seriously, which are the same fact seen from two angles.

  • You hold a high standard and the people who meet it would follow you anywhere.
  • The shop talk and the tests he sets his rookies became the show's most imitated running bit.
  • Eric Winter has said the character works because the audience is allowed to find him annoying first.
  • Your weakness is that discipline is easier to give people than warmth, and you know which one they need.

Angela Lopez

You said what you wanted and then you went and got it. Lopez wanted detective from the first episode, said so out loud, and got there by being better at the work than the people who were quieter about wanting it.

  • You are direct, which some people find abrupt and the rest find enormously restful.
  • She is the character the show most often trusts with the actual detective plotting.
  • Her storyline with Wesley gave the series its best running argument about what the job costs at home.
  • Your flaw is that being right quickly is not the same as bringing everybody with you.

What Does Sony’s Decision Mean for 4K Blu-ray Collectors?

For existing owners, the immediate issue is future hardware choice. Discontinuing a player does not stop a functioning unit from playing the movies someone already owns. The concern is what happens when collectors need to replace that unit, particularly as the industry’s commitment to Blu-ray hardware and collectors continues to face scrutiny. A disc-equipped PS5 can play 4K Ultra HD Blu-rays, standard Blu-rays, and DVDs, according to PlayStation’s support documentation. That makes the console useful for households that already use it for games and movies. However, the PS5 lacks Dolby Vision support for disc playback, making it a different proposition from a dedicated player for viewers whose home theaters use that format.

The news arrives after other changes have already made collecting less straightforward, including Best Buy’s retreat from physical movie sales. At the same time, releases such as Oppenheimer’s sought-after 4K edition have demonstrated why collectors continue to value discs. Sony’s decision concerns playback hardware, an essential part of making those purchases useful over the long term.

Other manufacturers still offer dedicated 4K Blu-ray players, including Panasonic, so the format retains alternatives. For collectors who value owning movies beyond a streaming subscription, the loss nevertheless reduces the available choices in Sony’s home market. The company’s next steps internationally remain unconfirmed, leaving the broader debate over streaming and physical ownership with another hardware question to follow.
