Speaking with Variety, Abrams explained why the tragic twist works as an origin story for the outbreak:
"Everything that this character went through [...] and all this sacrifice is essentially for nothing. It tells the story of why this virus got out and continued to go out and that there was this possibility of it being fixed. I think it’s a cool origin story."
