Lili Reinhart Reveals Story Behind ‘My Date with the President’s Daughter’ Dress Recreation

Lili Reinhart is ready for her date with the perfect pink dress, oh yeah. 

The Love Hypothesis star stepped out in a custom Miu Miu look for the movie’s Los Angeles premiere on Sept. 22. And while walking the red carpet for the event, she revealed that the velvet pink outfit was inspired by a look worn by Elisabeth Harnois in the 1998 Disney TV movie My Date with the President’s Daughter. 

And Reinhart’s recreation of the iconic getup was even more meaningful than that. Indeed, she revealed that the dress wound up inspiring her fashionable references to several prominent rom-coms throughout the film’s press tour. 

“This was sort of the dress that sparked the idea of doing an homage,” Reinhart exclusively told E! News’ Erin Lim Rhodes on the red carpet. “I don't know why it was this one. I guess this is the one that lives in the back of my head forever.”

And once she had the idea, designer brand Miu Miu was ready “to play,” making the 30-year-old a custom version of the pink dress that she could keep forever. 

“It’s an honor to have a custom anything,” she added, “but custom Miu Miu is really special.”

Of course, her My Date with the President’s Daughter-inspired outing is just the most recent time Reinhart has recreated an unforgettable movie dress during her press tour. She also nodded to Kate Hudson’s yellow dress from How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, a floral dress worn by the late Brittany Murphy in Uptown Girls and a purple slip dress with a coat similar to what Jennifer Garner wore in 13 Going on 30. 

But it wasn’t just rom-coms that captured her attention.

“I paid homage to Ever After and Atonement,” she noted. “Those are romance movies and also dramas. To me, rom-coms can kind of seemingly be taken less seriously, so I wanted to put them all into a group together.”

However, it all originated with the little pink dress, one which the Disney film’s original star Harnois admitted she was nervous about wearing. 

"When the costume designer showed it to me, I wasn't fully comfortable with how skintight it was, how short it was," she shared with E! News in 2024. "I was a tomboy as a kid and then kind of not that way as a teenager—like not that comfortable to wear clothes like that. Not that it wasn't cute, I just was self-conscious. I was at the most self-conscious age I could be."

Harnois—who was 18 when she made the film alongside Boy Meets World’s Will Friedle—even asked the costume designer if she could wear something else, but was told no.  

"I was like, ‘OK,' and I wasn't gonna fight her on it. Look what happened: It ended up being this iconic thing that people wear for Halloween,” the 47-year-old said. “I feel grateful that we got to use that dress because I think that's part of what brought the movie so much attention was those reveals with our characters getting our new clothes. I think she did a really good job, our costume designer."
