Gov't reports 7.8 pct growth in customs, excise revenue to Rp210 tln

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Finance recorded that customs and excise revenues collected Rp210.2 trillion (US$11.5 billion) as of August 31, 2026, experiencing growth of 7.8 percent on an annual basis from the previous Rp194.9 trillion (US$10.6 billion).

"With the growth of 7.8 percent, this is a very good performance," Finance Minister Suahasil Nazara said at the press conference for the September 2026 Edition of the State Budget on Friday.

According to him, the growth in customs and excise revenues was supported by all main components.

Excise revenue was recorded at Rp148.7 trillion (US$8.1 billion), an increase of 3.2 percent compared to the position in August 2025 of Rp144 trillion (US$7.8 billion), driven by enforcement activities and increased production of cigarettes and beverages containing ethyl alcohol (MMEA).

Meanwhile, import duty revenues increased 13 percent from Rp32.2 trillion (US$1.7 billion) to Rp36.4 trillion (US$1.9 billion), influenced by the increase in import volume and exchange rate movements.

Export duties recorded the highest growth, namely 34.4 percent, from Rp18.7 trillion (US$1.02 billion) to Rp25.1 trillion (US$1.3 billion), supported by an increase in the price and volume of exports of crude palm oil (CPO).

On the other hand, the Directorate General of Customs and Excise (DJBC) has also strengthened supervision of the circulation of illegal goods.

Until August 2026, the number of prosecutions for illegal cigarettes was recorded at 13,151 times, an increase of 9.8 percent compared to 11,979 prosecutions in the same period the previous year.

From this action, the government seized around 1.1 billion illegal cigarettes, an increase of 60.2 percent annually from around 702 million cigarettes.

The figure includes 8.96 million cigarettes seized in Tanjung Priok, Jakarta. The value recovered through the use of legal remedies as a last resort reached Rp94.3 billion (US$5.1 million).

For narcotics, the number of prosecutions dipped by 7.9 percent to 1,117, from 1,213 in the previous year. However, the amount of evidence seized rose 11.2 percent, from 10.28 tons to 11.43 tons.

This evidence includes around 2.6 tons of liquid methamphetamine which was seized from the MV Ocean Porter in the Riau Islands.

Apart from illegal cigarettes and narcotics, the government recorded 74 raids on gold and gold jewelry until September 14, 2026, with a total of around 334.5 kilograms of evidence. The items consisted of 120.2 kilograms of gold bullion, 208.6 kilograms of gold jewelry, and 5.7 kilograms of gold dust.

In one case, officers seized more than 29 kilograms of gold from four suitcases with a value of around Rp73.3 billion (US$4 million), with the potential loss in state revenue from this case estimated at Rp8.5 billion (US$465 thousand).

"Customs and Excise is responsible not only for collecting state revenue but also for monitoring illegal goods and excisable goods. Therefore, we always carry out revenue collection alongside our enforcement duties," Minister Nazara noted.
