Indonesia eyes hosting the global Year of Creativity in 2027

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia is exploring the possibility of hosting the Year of Creativity 2027 after the Ministry of Creative Economy met with a delegation from the World Creativity Organization (WCO) to discuss the proposal.
Creative Economy Minister Teuku Riefky Harsya said hosting the event could showcase Indonesia’s creative industries internationally while generating long-term economic benefits.
“This initiative presents a major opportunity to bring Indonesia's creative ecosystem to the global stage,” Harsya said in an official statement released on Wednesday (October 28).
“We hope our participation will not be limited to hosting a ceremonial event, but will deliver sustainable economic impacts, expand international cooperation networks, and reinforce the foundation of our creative industries in the long run,” he added.
During the meeting, the WCO delegation outlined the program’s framework and official bidding and selection procedures. Indonesia is also assessing its readiness in comparison with Brazil, which is hosting the inaugural Year of Creativity in 2026.
The discussions also examined opportunities for young Indonesian talents and creative entrepreneurs to access international markets through the event.
Harsya said creativity should be viewed not only as artistic expression but also as a driver of innovation, business opportunities, national competitiveness, economic development, social inclusion, sustainability, and human progress. As a follow-up, the ministry and relevant stakeholders plan to establish an internal assessment team to evaluate the proposal.
The team will assess infrastructure readiness, potential strategic partnerships, and the event’s alignment with national economic priorities before the government submits an official bid.
If selected, Indonesia could use the event to raise international awareness of its creative talent, products, and intellectual property (IP), while expanding access to global networks and foreign investment.
WCO Co-Founder and Vice President Edna dos Santos-Duisenberg expressed optimism about Indonesia’s creative ecosystem and the potential for collaboration ahead of 2027.
“We see that Indonesia possesses a highly vibrant and competitive creative ecosystem. We hope this preliminary discussion paves the way for strong, sustainable collaboration to elevate Indonesia's creative potential into the international spotlight in 2027,” dos Santos-Duisenberg said.
The World Creativity Organization is an international body that promotes creativity as a catalyst for economic transformation, innovation, education, and sustainable development.
