DPWH meets with Bulacan LGUs to discuss solutions to flooding such as detention basins

Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Vince Dizon met with local chief executives in Bulacan on Friday to discuss interventions after President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. ordered the agency to have long-term solutions to address the flooding in the province.

"Sa pakikipagpulong ni Public Works Secretary Vince Dizon sa local chief executives ng Bulacan, tinalakay ang immediate interventions ng DPWH upang maibsan ang matinding pagbaha sa Bulacan, habang pinaghahandaan ang medium at long-term solutions tulad ng pagpapagawa ng detention basins at pagsasaayos ng mga uka sa flood mitigation structures," the DPWH said in a statement.

(In a meeting between Public Works Secretary Vince Dizon and local chief executives of Bulacan, the DPWH discussed immediate interventions to alleviate severe flooding in the province, while preparing medium and long-term solutions such as constructing detention basins and repairing gaps in flood mitigation structures.)

According to a report in 24 Oras Weekend on Saturday, the meeting centered on implementing local proposals and master plans in establishing detention basins.

Dizon also raised that every municipality should have land reserved for water storage. He also suggested dredging of rivers to hold more water volume during heavy rainfall.

Bulacan is among the flood-prone areas in the country. The problem had been highlighted with the corruption involving flood control projects in the province.

The town of Calumpit, for instance, is one of the areas in Bulacan that continues to face flooding woes during inclement weather. —Vince Angelo Ferreras/KG, GMA News
