Mariga ousted as FKF vice-president following stormy meeting in Meru

NAIROBI, Kenya, November 7, 2026 – Football Kenya Federation (FKF) vice president MacDonald Mariga has been expelled from the National Executive Committee (NEC), along with six other members.
The former Inter Milan midfielder was ousted at a Special General Meeting (SGM) in Meru on Saturday afternoon, chaired by FKF president Hussein Mohammed.
Sixty-five delegates in attendance voted in favour of the proposal to revoke Mariga’s position whereas AFC Leopards chair Boniface Ambani was the only one to oppose it.
Others who have been expelled from NEC include Dan Shikanda (Nairobi), Collins Kalee (Nyanza), Bernard Lagat (Rift Valley), Violet Kerubo (women’s representative), Robert Macharia (Central) and Gabriel Mghendi (Coast).
Speaking after the ouster of the seven, Hussein noted that they had been invited to defend themselves before they assembly but they declined to do so or send a legal representative.
“Just for the record, all the seven members of NEC who the Congress has taken action on today were invited to give submissions. None of them did. They never responded in writing. They never sent a representative. They were asked to even nominate a legal representative, but they never did,” Hussein said.
The SGM proceeded in the aftermath of a drama-filled morning in which the different factions went at each other, with police officers from the Rapid Deployment Unit (RDU) becoming involved.
Teargas filled the Three Steers Hotel — the venue of the meeting — as different factions engaged in a war of words.
