The following contains spoilers for Street FighterStreet Fighter is full of easter eggs and reimaginings of concepts from the game series of the same name, including in its expansive cast. It could be argued that the bombastic action film suffers from an overabundance of characters, which leaves familiar faces with little to contribute to the plot besides a few jokes, an iconic pose, and a fight scene or two.

Some characters get more spotlight, driving the narrative forward in key ones. Many of those chosen for those roles make sense, given their popularity with the fandom and enduring qualities in the series. However, one character who ends up being surprisingly is Dan, who spent the preceding thirty-one years as the franchise's biggest joke.

Dan Hikabi Isn't Usually This Important In Street Fighter

Street Fighter Dan (2)

Introduced early in the film, Dan Hibiki is set up as a skeezy stand-in for his games counterpart, only to actually play a minor but surprisingly important role in the film's central dynamic. In the games, Dan was introduced in Street Fighter Alpha and eventually established as another student of Gouken.

Unlike Ryu and Ken, who honed their abilities to an impressive degree, Dan failed to exhibit the same potential as his fellow students. In the games themselves, Dan is something of a joke character, with a purposefully weak and strange fighting style that more ambitious players took to mastering as a challenge.

The film leans more heavily into the fact that Dan trained alongside Ryu and Ken, making him Ken's only enduring friend during his rise in global fame. While he never kept up with his fellow students and tries to make his training profitable, he remained close to Ken. Dan is recast as Ken's manager, hyping his friend up and trying to keep his spirits up even while being called a leech by people like Guile.

It's an interesting way to take Dan's status as a joke character and infuse it into the perspective of the characters within the narrative. To people like Guile, Dan really is a joke. However, given a bit more character depth than the cartoonish game incarnation, the live-action Dan seems genuinely put out by everyone's estimation of him.

Notably, though, Dan proves to be an important go-between for Ryu and Ken. He's the one who argues they are all still friends, even donning his gi to face off with Evil Ryu when he's briefly corrupted by the Satsui no Hado. Dan is still portrayed with a bit of the self-inflated ego of his game counterpart, but he's depicted as a much more emotionally grounded (and comically weasely) personality in the film.

I Really Wasn't Expecting Dan To Work So Well In Street Fighter

While Street Fighter's larger plot has to do with Ryu, Akuma, Chun-Li, and M. Bison, the emotional arc for the film is rooted in Ken's story. Ken's frustration, rage, and jealousy towards Ryu are what propel his bombastic attitude and self-destructive overconfidence, further isolating him from the people around him.

Similarly, Dan has suffered in the shadow of his fellow warriors, to the point where people address him as a joke if they acknowledge him at all. Dan is an extension of how the world feels about Ken, comparing him unfavorably to those around him and ignoring his potential. While Dan clearly benefits from his friendship, he also offers genuine support and friendship to Ken.

The fact that Dan actually gets involved in a fight willingly to try and break up Ryu and Ken's conflict takes on another layer when Ryu's own jealousy of Ken is revealed. It's their fellow student, overshadowed by both of them, who forces Ryu and Ken to back off and recognize their bond. It's a small part of the overall film, but it's a more important role than I ever expected Dan to play in the narrative.

The film does all this without forgetting to have fun at Dan's expense. Befitting his lore from the games, where he can't fight and has a school that teaches his poor version of martial arts, Dan still can't really hold his own against the other fighters in the film. Despite this, he still faces Evil Ryu and joins up with the other heroes on their mission to stop M. Bison.

It all sets up Dan to be a more heroic and important character in a prospective sequel, which isn't something longtime fans of the franchise may have expected. If anything, Dan would have seemed like an obvious pick for the kind of role that Joe fills in the movie, getting a brief appearance before being used as a sacrificial lamb to show off how deadly Akuma is.

Instead, the filmmakers clearly saw potential in Dan as a fellow student of Gouken, making him more important than in most other incarnations of the franchise. Dan is typically a gag more than a character, the kind of character who is there to appease fans with a deep-cut. However, Street Fighter found a way to treat the character with a level of unexpected respect.
