Brydon Carse will not face charges after police drop investigation into alleged assault

Brydon Carse will not face any charges after Derbyshire police dropped an investigation into an alleged assault in Derby city centre last month.

The fast bowler was arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly during a night out with his Durham teammates following a County Championship win over Derbyshire, which led to him being dropped from the England squad for their 3-0 Test series win over Pakistan.

Carse had been a non-playing member of the squad for the first Test at Headingley before being released to play for Durham, who beat Derbyshire by 338 runs to close in on promotion from Division Two, which has since been secured.

Images circulated on social media the day after the game on Sunday 23 August showed Carse in handcuffs surrounded by police officers, which led to Derbyshire police confirming a man had been arrested outside Molly Malone’s bar the following day.

“A man in his 30s was arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly in Derby city centre on Saturday night,” said the police.

“However the man was de-arrested shortly afterwards having agreed to leave the area.”

On the following Wednesday, the police gave a further statement, which said: “We are investigating allegations of an assault in Derby city centre. No arrests have yet been made and the investigation is ongoing.”

The Guardian has learned that the matter is now closed, however, with no action to be taken.

Carse will face a further investigation from the Cricket Regulator to determine whether he will face any disciplinary action from the England and Wales Cricket Board, who employ him on a two-year central contract that has a further 12 months to run.

Carse was left out of the England white ball squad for this month’s two T20 and one-day international series against Sri Lanka despite being available for selection, with coach Brendon McCullum saying this week that he had to “work through the issues” that followed his arrest.
