Immigration leverages tech to boost border security, public service

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Marking two years under the Prabowo Subianto–Gibran Rakabuming Raka administration, Indonesia’s Directorate General of Immigration is accelerating its transition toward technology-driven public services while tightening oversight along the country’s borders.
Speaking to ANTARA on Friday, Director General of Immigration Hendarsam Marantoko framed the modernizing efforts as a core component of the administration's Astacita agenda, which targets comprehensive legal and bureaucratic reform alongside economic development.
"Immigration must serve as a strategic state instrument in carrying out duties and functions that are fully oriented toward the interests of the people and the state," Hendarsam said.
He emphasized that as the nation’s gatekeeper, immigration plays a critical role in safeguarding national security against foreign influences or agendas incompatible with Pancasila and the 1945 Constitution.
To accelerate public service efficiency and transparency, the agency has deployed 298 autogate units across land, sea, and air checkpoints nationwide.
Key deployments include 90 units at I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport in Bali, 78 units at Soekarno-Hatta Airport in Banten, 28 units at Juanda Airport in Surabaya, and 10 newly operational units at General Ahmad Yani Airport in Semarang.
To monitor remote border zones, the agency has partnered with the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) to launch "Digital Fence," a drone-assisted surveillance system targeting remote maritime and land border zones.
Alongside digital initiatives, enforcement remains strict. Between January 1 and October 2, 2026, authorities deported 3,897 foreign nationals nationwide, with an additional 89 individuals placed under investigation for immigration violations.
Despite intensified oversight, Hendarsam reassured that policy adjustments remain balanced to support the national investment climate.
"We must protect, facilitate and partner with foreign nationals who are sincere and make tangible contributions to the nation, thereby supporting the investment climate,” he added.
