U-20 WWC: Falconets book quarter-final spot with victory over England

Nigeria’s Falconets have secured their place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup after a commanding 3-0 victory over England in their Round of 16 clash.

The West Africans knocked out one of the tournament's favourites in Bielsko-Biała, Poland, on Thursday, September 17, 2026 to keep their hopes alive of winning yhe tournament for the first time in history.

The Falconets kicked off the game in fine style after Tosin Rafiu gave Nigeria the perfect start, opening the scoring in the 8th minute with a composed finish. England had an opportunity to level from the penalty spot before half-time, but Falconets captain and goalkeeper Christiana Uzoma produced a crucial save to deny Rachel Maltby, preserving Nigeria’s lead at the break.

Nigeria came out strongly after the restart and doubled their advantage just two minutes into the second half through Janet Akekoromowei. Substitute Mary Mamudu then completed the scoring in the 73rd minute to seal an emphatic win for Moses Aduku’s side.

The victory continues Nigeria’s impressive turnaround in the tournament. After losing 2-0 to Spain and drawing 0-0 with China in their opening two group games, the Falconets thrashed New Caledonia 10-1 before overcoming England in the knockout stage.

Nigeria, two-time runners-up at the U-20 Women’s World Cup, will now face the winner of Poland vs Colombia in the quarter-finals on September 20 as they continue their pursuit of a first world title at this level.
