Gears of War: E-Day sales numbers – How much money has it made?

Marcus and Dom are back with a bang, but how many copies has Gears of War: E-Day sold?
The game has been a hit with both critics and fans, and with the next Xbox console in development, the company will be hoping that Gears can be a system seller.
But with rumours abound that sales may not be up to par, here's what you need to know about the Gears of War: E-Day sales numbers.
There are currently no official sales figures for Gears of War: E-Day, although, we do have some estimates from analysts.
Rhys Elliott, head of market analysis at Alinea Analytics, revealed on 9 October via X that Gears of War: E-Day had sold an estimated 230 thousand copies.
Of these, Steam accounts for around 168,000 sales, while Xbox accounts for 62,000 across both console and PC.
While that may sound relatively low, especially on the Xbox side, Elliott does note that there's quite a large caveat – Xbox Game Pass.
Approximately 1.7 million players are estimated to have played Gears of War: E-Day via their Game Pass subscription rather than purchasing a copy outright, effectively cannibalising much of Xbox's potential sales.

That sounds bad, but Xbox offered subscribers the chance to play the game five days early for $30 or their local equivalent, with an estimated 722,000 players upgrading.
As a result, while the game has sold far more copies on Steam than Xbox, Xbox accounts for around three quarters of the game's total revenue thus far.
That means Gears of War: E-Day has made approximately $37m for Xbox, with $26m of that coming from Xbox sales and Game Pass.
That being said, Elliott does note that, assuming three quarters of the 722k players who were willing to pay $30 just for early access were willing to pay $70 for the full game, the game would have already hit the $40m mark.
But this all seems to be part of Xbox's new strategy, and if exclusives like E-Day can bring more players to the Xbox ecosystem in the next few years, then their next console may well get off to a strong start.
Gears of War: E-Day is out now on Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S and Steam.
