PlayStation 6 Gets Official Release Date Update

Next month celebrates the sixth anniversary of the PlayStation 5, and although it still feels as though it is in its infancy, talk has already turned to what comes next. Whilst we can safely assume that the PlayStation 6 will be the next console on the horizon for Sony, we do not yet have an official release date, and with the complications that the PS5's launch ran into, it is understandable that some users feel as though all of this is pretty premature.

Launched back in November 2020, the PlayStation 5 arrived during the COVID-19 pandemic, and whilst this would have been the perfect time to dedicate some spare time to gaming, it was made almost impossible thanks to stock shortages, and, of course, scalpers. As such, many users did not get their hands on a PS5 until at least a year following its launch, but then, they found themselves running into another issue: a lack of exclusives.

Although Sony has since detailed plans to put more emphasis on its upcoming exclusives, even going as far as to reveal that they will no longer work on PC ports following the end of PlayStation exclusivity, this has not been the case for the PlayStation 5. Despite being on the market for almost six years, the PS5 has only welcomed a handful of exclusives and, as such, gamers have often felt no need to boot up their consoles when they can just play brand-new releases on other platforms.

With PlayStation 5s collecting dust in many households, it seems as though Sony will have to pull out all the stops when it comes to the PlayStation 6 and now, thanks to a recent comment, it seems as though this could happen as early as late 2027. However, with Xbox's Project Helix also expected to launch around this time, Sony may have some stiff competition once again.

According to PlayStation CEO Hiroki Totoki, when asked about the PlayStation 6 during a recent Wall Street Journal profile, he said that there has not been an exact release date or window "locked in" for the next PlayStation console. Put simply, PlayStation is unwilling to comment on a potential launch date, which could spell bad news for its current production. Either that or the company wants to keep information close to its chest to help with the competition.

With many industry insiders believing that the PlayStation 6 could cost upwards of $1000 due to the ongoing RAM shortages, component prices, and the (unfortunate) ever-growing use of generative AI, it is no wonder that Sony feels the need to get this right. After all, this price point is just not feasible for many people during a cost of living crisis, and so it will have to be worth the money for potential customers to make the leap.

For now, at the time of writing, neither a release date nor price for the PlayStation 6 has been officially confirmed, but with the PlayStation 5 about to celebrate its sixth anniversary, Sony will definitely be feeling the pressure to deliver, and deliver soon.
