Moomin Is Back With Midsummer Madness - And We've Got An Early Look And Release Date

The Moomins are back in an all-new adventure, Moomin: Midsummer Madness, and ScreenRant got to take an early peek at this clever and entertaining game. Based on Tove Jansson's Swedish fairy tales, the stories of the adorable Moomin family in Moominvalley have become beloved by many across the globe. This family and their friends often find themselves on chaotic adventures with a touch of wholesomeness that can't be beat.

This upcoming adventure, Moomin: Midsummer Madness, stars Moomintroll and Little My and features iconic scenes from the original work of Jansson's novel, Moominsummer Madness, alongside brand-new stories for the game. Created by indie developers at Crossbridge Game Studio, the game is for fans of Moomin and anyone who appreciates a charming, wholesome point-and-click adventure.

Moomin: Midsummer Madness Arrives This November

Moomin: Midsummer Madness is currently still in development for PC (via Steam) as well as Nintendo Switch 1 and 2 systems. While it previously only gave a vague release window of 2026, we are now happy to say the team has announced a release date of November 12, 2026.

An all-new trailer for the game has just been posted on YouTube, giving us a look at what to expect from the adventure and showcasing the beautifully crafted artwork so familiar to the Moomin franchise.

Currently, the hand-painted adventure of Moomin: Midsummer Madness is available to wishlist on Steam. I recently got to take a look at an early build of the game's demo, which will be available for lucky players to try at Gamescom and during October's Steam Next Fest.

A New Adventure For Moomintroll And Little My

While everyone's favorite Snufkin is once again off on travels of his own, tragedy strikes Moominvalley. While the demo starts off with Moomintroll and Little My simply enjoying playing together, things quickly change. After a volcanic eruption disrupts the area, a powerful storm rolls through, flooding Moominvalley, including the Moomin family's home.

While trying their best to stay afloat and gather everything to make a nice cup of coffee and breakfast, Moomin and Little My help out wherever they can. While drifting through the rising waters, they find a strange building and discover it's a mysterious theater housing costumes, scripts, and a strangely magical stage.

The adventure includes many story points unique to the game, while also giving fans several famous scenes from the Moomin franchise. These recreated scenes are made with "deep respect for the original source material," as the developers stated, and blend perfectly with the new adventures.

Gameplay For This Adorable Point And Click Adventure

I was able to play an early build of the demo for the game, which will be revealed at Gamescom and covers part of chapter one of this story-rich game. While telling what happens at the start of the flood and setting the stage for what's to come, we move Moomintroll and Little My around using point-and-click mechanics.

You control both characters, Moomintroll and Little My, to explore the landscape, easily switching between the two as needed and knowing that the other will happily follow along when not active. Searching the environment, there are many things that are interactive when you click on them, whether it's adding to the story as Moomintroll and Little My comment on something, or allowing you to grab an object to add to your inventory for later.

The game's key feature is its puzzles and whimsical mini-games. The puzzles often add a bit of a challenge, some more than others, and if you get stuck anywhere, there is a handy hint system to fall back on. Each puzzle I tried was vastly different from the others. Sometimes you might shrink down as Little My to push boxes around through a series of mazes. Other times you'll be combining objects to build a small boat.

Additionally, playfully fanciful mini-games offer a bit of humorous diversion. This includes one scene where Moomintroll logically attaches Little My to the end of a fishing pole and then catapults her into the sea to rescue some muffins from seagulls. And somehow that just works perfectly for both the story and in building our love for the world and these eccentric characters.

Final Thoughts, And Why You Should Try This Game

Anyone who considers themselves a fan of cozy gaming will appreciate the stress-free, calming feeling that you can get from playing Moomin: Midsummer Madness. Even when the puzzles feel a bit tricky and confusing, it's easy to get a hint or simply take your time working on the challenge, as the game has no timer to add to your anxiety.

Meanwhile, as someone who loves the Moomin stories, this title just brings the world to life all over again. Bringing scenes from the novel Moominsummer Madness and blending them so effortlessly with the charming puzzles feels natural and immersive in ways that you wouldn't expect. The hand-drawn artwork stays true to the series, and switching between characters lets you see and hear a little more from each of their perspectives.

Overall, I'm honestly very excited for the full release of Moomin: Midsummer Madness on November 12, and I'd absolutely recommend taking a look at the demo on Steam when it's available at October's Steam Next Fest.
