David Ayer & Brad Pitt Clashed Over Final Cut For New Survival Thriller In New Report

Dueling edits of Heart of the Beast were reportedly produced after Brad Pitt and David Ayer disagreed on the film's tone.

Thanks to the immense success of Pitt's best films, his upcoming movie Heart of the Beast is highly anticipated. In the movie, the A-list actor portrays a Special Forces officer who has to survive in the Alaskan wilderness after a plane crash strands him and his dog.

A new report from Puck News' Matthew Belloni, which cites three sources, states that star and producer Pitt and director Ayer each oversaw a separate edit of Heart of the Beast. Pitt's version, which was reportedly backed by the film's other producers, Damien Chazelle and Olivia Hamilton, was described by the report as more "esoteric" than the director's take.

According to the sources, Paramount's studio heads, Dana Goldberg and Josh Greenstein, gave Pitt and Ayer more time to resolve their issues and create a cut of the film together. That appears to have worked, as the report claims the version of the movie that will be released in the coming days was approved by both men. Furthermore, it notes that the final cut skewed closer to the director's original take, but with substantial input from the star and producer.

This isn't the first time that there have been reports about battles over the editing of one of Ayer's films. The director memorably spoke out in 2018 about his original version of Suicide Squad being different from the movie that was ultimately released. Since then, there has been a push for the director's cut to see the light of day.

Despite the recent Puck News report, Ayer expressed immense pride in the upcoming movie Heart of the Beast in an August 13 X post. He also wrote positively about working with Pitt on the film. Check out Ayer's post below:

Prior to the making of Heart of the Beast, Pitt had already starred in one of Ayer's movies, Fury. While speaking to Collider in October 2014, Ayer described Pitt's commitment to his role in the film and how important he was to the story's success. "I think great acting is about inhabiting a skin and transforming yourself, and Brad absolutely did that. Brad got lost in the world. He feels of that world and of that time. The movie is a character study of him, in a big way."

Based on Ayer's comments in 2014, what he wrote on X about Heart of the Beast, and the fact that they collaborated together for a second time, he and Pitt seem to enjoy working together. Still, that doesn't preclude them from having reportedly clashed over initial visions for the film. Ultimately, it seems that they were able to work together to craft a movie that has become a highly anticipated thriller.

Heart of the Beast will be widely released in the United States on September 25.
