Twenty-two people were killed on Sunday when the bus they were travelling in rammed into a truck at Kanga area along the Mombasa-Nairobi highway.

Makueni Health Chief Officer Harvey Mulei said 18 passengers died on the spot, while four others succumbed to injuries while receiving treatment at the Mtito Andei Sub-County Referral Hospital.

"The facility currently has 16 patients receiving treatment while two were referred to Makindu Sub-County Referral Hospital," he said.

Witnesses said the accident occurred at around 7:45am. The bus was heading towards Mombasa at the time of the accident.

According to a source who spoke to Nation, the bus had come from a funeral in Western Kenya. It was heading towards Mombasa when the accident occurred.

Makueni County Commissioner Abdullahi Khalif said an investigation had commenced to establish the circumstances leading to the accident.

The hospital's medical superintendent, Kelvin Wamalwa, said that the injured were in a critical condition.
