WEST END FINAL

The British Museum has announced a series of measures to improve the Bayeux Tapestry exhibition experience after complaints from visitors.

The 11th-century embroidery, which depicts the Norman conquest of England, went on public display last month and has proved one of the museum's most sought-after exhibitions in recent years. Tickets have already sold out for the remainder of the year.

As a result, the Museum has announced a series of changes to the exhibition, including extended opening hours.

They hope longer opening times will stop queues from building, allow those in later time slots time to get into the gallery, and to space times between allotted visitor bookings.

The exact longer opening times and the details of how it will work for those already with tickets have not yet been announced by the museum and are expected soon.

Other measures announced include an audio guide introduced from Monday to help visitors experience the Tapestry with extra detail. Alongside this, there will be more signage within the gallery.

There will be additional seating for those visitors who require breaks during their wait to arrive at the showcase, and there will be greater signage to explain the different parts of the exhibition.

While anybody who has been turned away will be given a refund and a priority booking slot for a rearranged time.

A British Museum spokesperson said: "The response to the Bayeux Tapestry has been extraordinary, and we are delighted by the excitement and interest it has generated.

"We also know that some visitors have faced longer queues than we would have wanted, so we are introducing a series of measures - including an audio guide, clearer signage, additional seating and longer opening hours - to make the experience smoother and give more people the time they need to enjoy the Tapestry."

Tickets to see the exhibition from January 1 to March 31 next year will go on sale on October 21. Priority booking will be given to museum members from October 6.
