Near the Gaza border, Dream Island offers a luxury retreat built around rest and healing

As a photojournalist, my lens is usually trained on the rugged and the raw, capturing the stories written in the dust of the road and the quiet resilience of those who call the borderlands home. But every so often, the road leads to a place that feels less like a destination and more like a collective exhale.

Just a short 20-minute drive from the city of Sderot and the Gaza border area, and a mere 45 minutes from the frantic energy of central Israel, lies Dream Island – Spa & Health Resort. It is a sprawling sanctuary that operates as a closed, secluded oasis, providing a nearby gateway for those seeking wellness and a deep physiological reset within the soft, rolling horizons of the northern Negev.

For couples and honeymooners, the resort offers 26 boutique suites that redefine the concept of an intimate getaway.

These smart-controlled sanctuaries are master classes in privacy, featuring hot tubs on balconies overlooking the open fields of the Yoav plains, or private courtyards with their own saunas and pools.

Every suite is stocked with a VIP greeting that includes a minibar filled with cocktails, sweets, and high-end treats, intended to make the transition into relaxation immediate.

Beside the coffee station, an artistic dessert truck features elegant “candle” cakes and fruit-designed desserts that create a fragrant, inviting atmosphere as you enter.

Everywhere you turn, from the quiet corners of the gardens overlooking the ecological lake to the sprawling pools, there is a recurring sense that you can always find a place to sit, relax, and disconnect from the world outside.

The Healing Tent and the science of the reset

Deep within the grounds, guests encounter the Healing Tent, a space dedicated to the “restart” of hot and cold water therapy.

This experience is a profound physical reset, featuring temperature-controlled ice baths and breathing exercises led by specialized guides to help guests decompress through controlled thermal cycles.

For day visitors who desire the privacy of a suite without an overnight stay, the resort offers “Premium Day capsules.”

These luxurious, smart-equipped caravans are imported specifically for the resort, providing a private living room, bedroom, shower, and a stocked minibar for a secluded rest or meal within the heart of the grounds.

The culinary heartbeat of the resort is found in the main restaurant, Armonim, which delivers a high-level experience evoking the grand theme hotels of Las Vegas. The design is elegant and fashionable, featuring a grand piano where a DJ often performs for the guests, blending classical grace with a modern rhythmic pulse.

While day guests enjoy an expansive lunch included in their visit, those staying in the suites are treated to professional dinners featuring incredible, high-level food platters.

For us, celebrating a life milestone like my wife Adi’s 40th birthday, the experience was heightened by a session in one of the couple’s rooms. These rooms are designed for total intimacy and professional-grade body treatments, ranging from Swedish massage and reflexology to aromatherapy.

The suites themselves are a master class in isolated luxury, featuring remarkably high ceilings and complete privacy.

Our stay included a private pool, an outdoor Jacuzzi, and a secluded resting tent, allowing us to spend one night and two full days entirely within this “bubble.”

In the modern wine room built around this ancient winepress, guests participate in workshops focusing on fruit wines produced in collaboration with the Lachish winery. These 16% alcohol, port-style wines are crafted from the pure essence of fruits like Pink Lady apples, black raspberries, peaches, and pomegranates.

The science behind these wines is fascinating. Because they are made from fruit rather than grapes, they contain no added white sugar, relying solely on the fruit’s natural sweetness. The fermentation process preserves the fruit’s natural vitamins and antioxidants, creating a boutique beverage exclusive to Dream Island and free of the industrial sulfites that often cause wine headaches.

Tasting these wines while sitting beside an archaeological treasure creates a bridge between Israel’s ancient agricultural history and its modern culinary innovation.

Resilience and a vision for the future

Following the outbreak of the war, Dream Island’s ownership dedicated itself to national recovery by hosting 50 combat soldiers every single day for free.

This initiative, which lasted for months, allowed entire military teams to decompress in the resort’s quiet groves and healing waters after months of service on the front lines. This commitment also extended to the wives of reservists, who were honored with dedicated appreciation events at the resort.
