India’s Nitesh won the silver medal in the Asian Games 2026 Greco-Roman wrestling 97kg event at the Nagoya City Inae Sports Center on Thursday.
The 23-year-old went down 0-4 on points to Japan’s Yuri Nakazato in the gold medal match to win India’s second medal in Greco-Roman in the ongoing edition.
Nitesh missed out on a chance to become the first Indian Greco-Roman wrestler to win gold since 1962.
The Indian wrestler had beaten Mongolia’s Gankhuyag Gaanbaatar in the semifinal after getting past Turkmenistan’s Amanberdi Agamammedov in the 1/4 finals.
After being shoved off the mat early, conceding a point, Nitesh was punished for passivity in the first Round, although he managed to stave away a takedown.
However, the Indian couldn’t prevent the Japanese wrestler from completing one in Round 2. Nakazato continued to be aggressive despite having a four-point lead and bagged the gold medal for his efforts.
