Netflix Canceling The Witcher’s 2026 Return Makes Streaming History

Netflix’s cancellation of The Witcher season 5 from its streaming schedule brings the show’s tenure as the platform’s flagship fantasy saga to a chaotic conclusion, but it also makes streaming history. This latest move in the tragic unraveling of Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri’s adventures on the small screen inadvertently sets a record to be proud of.

Those waiting to see how The Witcher’s story ends in season 5 will have to hold a little longer than originally planned, but Netflix should get there eventually. In delaying the inevitable, however, the streaming giant is taking its biggest fantasy series past a landmark set by Prime Video’s Good Omens earlier this year.

It’s already been a year since The Witcher season 4 ended with Geralt of Rivia still separated from his true love and their adopted daughter, under particularly difficult circumstances. Fans have derided the season, which received its fair share of negative critical reviews, too, before posting viewing figures far below previous seasons.

Understandably, some viewers wondered whether the show’s planned last season might be scrapped altogether, with The Witcher added to Netflix’s list of cancellations for 2026. However, such a drastic measure was never on the cards, because seasons 4 and 5 of the series were filmed concurrently, meaning its fifth and final installment will be completely no matter what.

Netflix Has Canceled The Witcher’s Planned 2026 Return

Instead of a total cancellation, Netflix has simply delayed The Witcher’s season 5 release until next year. It’s been removed from their 2026 schedule, but is expected to be released in the spring of 2027, most likely in March. This move has likely been caused by problems in the season’s post-production, but it might actually be a blessing in disguise for The Witcher.

If the series had released its long-anticipated final season this fall as Netflix originally intended, it would be in direct competition with three of the heaviest hitters in the fantasy genre, on rival streaming platforms. Firstly, on November 11, season 3 of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power begins on Prime Video, with episodes featuring Sauron’s creation of the One Ring, and Simon Pegg’s debut as the Balrog.

Season 3 of Percy Jackson and the Olympians, which is adapting Rick Riordan’s hugely popular and acclaimed novel The Titan's Curse, will follow on November 20, on both Disney+ and Hulu. Then, on December 25, comes the fantasy event of the year. Season 1 of HBO’s Harry Potter TV series premieres on Christmas Day.

In amongst this lineup of genre behemoths, there’s a good chance The Witcher season 5 would have been royally embarrassed, both in terms of viewing figures and critical reception. At least next March the show has the chance to carve out its own niche in the streaming schedule once more, and leave viewers with something like a positive impression, if not a completely satisfying conclusion.

By bringing its story to a close at the end of season 5, The Witcher will end a Netflix era in 2027. It will be more than seven years since the show debuted on our screens in December 2019, thrilling fans with a spectacular opening sequence which convinced everyone watching that Henry Cavill was born to play Geralt of Rivia.

In passing the seven-year mark, The Witcher will break the streaming record for fantasy shows that Good Omens secured with its own series finale back in May. Prime Video’s Terry Pratchett adaptation starring David Tennant is currently the longest-running streaming original fantasy series in television history, spanning exactly seven years from its first release to its last.

The Witcher will pass this milestone in mid-December, meaning that when its fifth season airs in early 2027, it will then become the fantasy show that’s lasted longest on streaming. However much it might have divided viewers (and actors) during its run, this Netflix series is nothing if not resilient.
