Sebelebele vs Matuludi? Who should start at right-back for Bafana?

With Khuliso Mudau injured, the right-back position at Bafana Bafana is contested by Kamohelo Sebelebele and Thabang Matuludi.

In Bafana’s 2-1 win over Guinea this past weekend, Pitso Mosimane opted to start with Sebelebele. The Orlando Pirates wingback had a solid showing and was awarded Man of the Match.

Mosimane however, said after the match that Sebelebele should mainly play as a right-back and overlap when needed.

Matuludi, who mainly plays as a defensive right-back, showed his attacking qualities during Mamelodi Sundowns’s ckash with Al Ahli earlier this month.

Former Polokwane City head coach Phuti Mohafe explaied how good the Downs defender was as a right winger before switching to right-back.

“I think a lot of people might not know that Matuludi played as a natural winger in the early days of his career,” he told FARPost.

“I converted him from winger to right-back a few years ago in the club called Dolphins FC in the Limpopo ABC Motsepe League.”

“And I remember we went to play the ABC Motsepe League National playoffs in Mpumalanga. We had only one right-back, and we moved Matuludi there; he played his best football in that position.”

Bafana Bafana take on Eritea on Wednesday evening in Cairo looking to secure their second win of the AFCON qualifiers. A home win against Guinea puts them in a perfect place in their group.

It remains to be seen whether Mosimane will start with Matuludi or Sebelebele at right-back.
