‘Diablo 5’ Set for Spring 2029 Release

“Diablo V” is in development at Xbox’s Blizzard Entertainment.

The new game is targeting a Spring 2029 release date, Blizzard announced Saturday during the opening ceremony for fan festival BlizzCon 2026 at the Anaheim Convention Center.

“Diablo V” will be set a century after the events of “Diablo IV” (which released in 2023) and, in a first for the video game franchise, take place in a world where Sanctuary has fallen.

According to the description for “Diablo V,” “For the first time, players will enter a Sanctuary where Diablo has triumphed and its heroes have been defeated. At the heart of Diablo V lies a defining question: what must you become when the world has already fallen?”

The first “Diablo” was released in 1996, marking 2026 as the 30th anniversary for the franchise. Since then, Blizzard says the “Diablo” games — which now consists of four mainline entries, the most recent being the release of “Diablo IV” in 2023 — have seen more than 130 million players worldwide to date.

“Diablo V” was not the franchise’s only big news revealed during BlizzCon Saturday. Blizzard president Johanna Faries opened the show by announcing a “Diablo” animated TV series is currently in development at Netflix.

Per Blizzard’s statement on the TV project, “After decades of bringing entire universes to life through our games, we’re partnering with some creative powerhouses to tell even more stories beyond gaming across new screens. A new animated series set in the world of ‘Diablo’ is in development with Netflix. More details will be shared in the future, but this is only the beginning, with even more taking shape across our universes.”

Fellow Blizzard brands had plenty to share during BlizzCon 2026’s opening ceremony as well, including news that a new “StarCraft” open-world shooter game is in active development and eyeing a 2030 release.
