Super Bowl quarterback Ken Anders sits down to discuss his heart, modern QBs and his Super Bowl ring from working with the Steelers
In this candid interview, Cincinnati Bengals Ring of Honor quarterback and 1981 NFL MVP Ken Anderson sits down to discuss critical topics spanning life after football, personal health advocacy, and the dramatic physical evolution of the game. Anderson shares his personal journey with cardiovascular wellness—explaining how cutting-edge AI diagnostic tools from HeartFlow revealed hidden risks and empowered him to take control of his health. He also reflects on the stark physical transformation of the NFL from his playing era to the modern game, the economic necessity of quarterback protection, and his unique perspective on one of football’s fiercest rivalries: the Cincinnati Bengals versus the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Welcome to Screencaps, "America's Best Daily Column," as named by the readers. Screencaps, which publishes seven-days-a-week, is a mix of sports, pop culture, and emails from sane readers from around the world. This column isn't for the coastal elites. Give us a week to steal your heart. Our track record is pretty good. Let's have some fun.
Let's get started this morning with news that I just completed my very first back-to-back country club experiences of my life. I'd never played private club golf – ever. As many of you know, I grew up in a farm town outside Dayton, Ohio. The closest I ever got to a private club was the front gate at Miami Valley Country Club along Salem Ave. as we were typically driving to downtown Dayton or to Good Sam Hospital.
Quick observations of the country club life:
- Lack of total degenerates. Yes, there are a few drinkers out there smacking the balls around, but I'm talking the total degens who have overrun many public courses. I'm burnt out on the total degens.
- Speed of play. After playing last Sunday in about five hours, and being very frustrated, it was nice to play a couple of rounds under four hours (3:53 on Thursday at Piqua Country Club, even with a stop at our buddy Fish's bar at his house along the course). I was telling Canoe Kirk that we might not be any good, but at least we move the ball and we're not holding up anyone.
- Friday's course, Stone Oak Country Club in suburban Toledo, might be the nicest place I've ever played if you take into consideration the full experience. When there's Nautica and mouthwash in the men's locker room, that's just next level. The course itself was amazing. Doglegs everywhere. I was honestly blown away by the quality of experience. I'd never been to a place with ice machines out on the course in random spots. That's a nice touch.
- How'd I play? 95-96. My low nine was 45 on Thursday at Piqua on the back nine. I could get to the high 80s at both places if I played them a couple of times. The greens at Piqua — the club opened in 1896 — were diabolical if you were out of position, which was my issue.
- There was also bad news: USB chargers have to work in golf carts at a high-end country club. No excuses.
Now let's pivot into the country club of college football experiences and what happened at Northwestern last night at the opener for Ryan Field, the new $900 million field that is a mini-modern NFL stadium with all the luxuries that NFL fans expect.
If Northwestern combines easier academic standards for its football players with this new stadium, this could be a college football franchise that makes some noise. This place is going to recruit itself. If boosters can improve NIL salaries – Northwestern is said to have half of Ohio State's $50-$55M NIL budget – watch out.

Screencaps Jr. is running in his final Saturday junior high invitational today
This is a big one. Jr.'s team hasn't lost an invitational during his middle school career. The only race they've lost in two years was last year's state championship. Today, the boys will be running on the shores of Lake Erie at a race they dominated last year. The weather should be perfect — 60 and sunny. No wind. I'm definitely no cross-country expert, but this seems like about as great as it's going to get.
The Ts are in Canada
Mike T. and Cindy T. are out and about soaking up some fresh air before winter kicks in.

And that is a wrap for this Saturday. If you get a chance, watch the Ken Anderson video I recorded this week on heart health. #NotSponsored. Ken was incredible. Great guy. He got my jokes. He even laughed HARD at a joke where I asked a doctor on the call if AI could detect if QBs like Ken have ice in their veins.
This week was a reminder of why this job is just the best. I get to interview interesting people. I then get to play golf at interesting places with friends I've met through this job and live a pretty incredible life via what this column has evolved into.
None of it is lost on me. I owe it all to those of you who have read all these years and get what I'm trying to accomplish on a daily basis.
With that said, let's go have a great weekend. Don't forget to stop and smell the pumpkin spice candles and tell your wife how much you enjoy fall. She'll smile. Try it.
