The Super Mario series has been through some notable ups and downs over the years, but recently it has been on a run of genuinely solid form that continues its already sterling legacy. The most recent entry in that regard was Super Mario Bros. Wonder, and it really was an exceptional experience that drove the series further into the Nintendo Switch era.

In the era we're currently enjoying, no game is safe from the dedicated work of fans and the community, and though their work is often directed towards retro efforts, that isn't exclusively true. Now, they've turned their attention to the aforementioned Wonder, and it could easily end up being one of the most exciting franchise releases of the next few years.

Over on YouTube, you should be able to find the trailer for Super Mario Galactic Wonder, an upcoming fan-made expansion mod for the Nintendo Switch version of Super Mario Bros. Wonder, developed by Team Fury. Essentially, bringing in elements of Super Mario Galaxy to the base game, it's a highly ambitious project that adds ten entirely original levels for players to enjoy.

Those levels come with themes, enemies, items, and backdrops inspired directly by the Super Mario Galaxy games, in a mash-up that looks like it's going to work surprisingly well at this early stage. The comments seemed to agree with that sentiment, with most weighing in to say how impressed they are with what we have seen of the project thus far.

"Wow, I'm shocked at how well people are learning to mod this game, despite its recency! Usually, for Super Mario games, it takes at least half a decade or so before people manage to implement brand-new levels, enemies, items and so on... Looks super fun!" one comment read.

While another added, "I was going to comment 'it's surreal to see level mods for a game this new', then remembered that modern games are much easier to tinker with, likely made with unity or unreal, and not programmed in esoteric assembly languages."

"Amazing job! I always pay lots of attention to game music, and this was the perfect way to mix Galaxy with Wonder! Both with the music and the gameplay!" a third said.

As for the next game in the Super Mario series from Nintendo themselves, the developer has already confirmed that a follow-up to Super Mario Odyssey is in development as a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive. We don't have an official reveal or release date for that just yet, but most inside information and speculation puts a potential release date at some point in 2027, though don't be surprised if it ends up releasing at the start of 2028 instead.
