Marvel Officially Debuts Quicksilver's Replacement, 11 Years After Age Of Ultron

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has just formally debuted Quicksilver's replacement 11 years after Avengers: Age of Ultron, and this character should have a bright future ahead in the franchise. Quicksilver is a unique character in the MCU's roster of heroes, and Marvel Studios has not really played with the concept of speedsters all that much beyond Quicksilver's brief time in the franchise.

When Aaron Taylor-Johnson formally debuted as Quicksilver in 2015's Avengers: Age of Ultron, it seemed like that could go on to be the start of a major chapter for the MCU. However, Pietro Maximoff was shockingly killed in his first movie at Marvel. Not only that, but a character known for his super speed died by being too slow to save Hawkeye and avoid getting shot.

This became one of the most controversial choices in the MCU movie timeline. While other characters who died in the MCU have since come back to life, such as Tom Hiddleston's Loki, who will appear in December's Avengers: Doomsday, Taylor-Johnson's Quicksilver has remained dead. The actor even went on to play another Marvel character, Kraven the Hunter, in a solo film for Sony's Spider-Man Universe.

Now, an MCU TV show has solved the problem of the franchise not having a main speedster character. It just so happens that Marvel is doing that through an MCU player who is connected to Quicksilver, but choosing not to bring Taylor-Johnson's Pietro back. That Marvel series in question is VisionQuest, expanding on one of the MCU's best trilogies.

VisionQuest Formally Debuts Quicksilver's MCU Replacement

Warning! This article contains SPOILERS for VisionQuest episodes 1 and 2.VisionQuest is the final release in the Marvel trilogy that started with WandaVision and continued with Agatha All Along, all MCU shows on Disney+. Tommy Maximoff appeared as a kid in WandaVision, mainly played by Jett Klyne. The Marvel series showcased his speedster powers, just like his uncle, Pietro. The MCU even brought back a version of Quicksilver to run alongside Tommy, with Evan Peters, who played Peter Maximoff in Fox's most recent X-Men movie timeline, returning to the role with the twist that the character was actually a mind-controlled Westview resident called Ralph Bohner, not Fox's Quicksilver brought through the multiverse.

While Tommy debuted in WandaVision and displayed his powers in that MCU TV show, it was a version of the character created by Elizabeth Olsen's Scarlet Witch in her Hex. He was not fully real. After that, a multiversal variant of Tommy appeared in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Now, the real Tommy, aka the reincarnated soul of Wanda and Vision's son, has returned in the body of Thomas Shepherd, played by Ruaridh Mollica, in VisionQuest. Tommy has shown his speedster powers so far by vibrating his hands extremely fast. VisionQuest is finally setting him up for the future of the MCU.

While Marvel has only released the first two episodes out of VisionQuest's eight so far, it is easy to see where Tommy should end up after the Marvel series is done. After all, the pieces are already on the board for a team made up of younger heroes to rise in the MCU. Be they the Young Avengers or the Champions, Ms. Marvel has already started recruiting that team, going to Kate Bishop, the new Hawkeye, and presumably Cassie Lang, Ant-Man's daughter, as per her father's appearance in Daredevil: Born Again and his comments about Kamala Khan being in California.

Given how Kathryn Newton's Cassie is in the Avengers: Doomsday trailer, the rest of the team could show up in the next MCU movie. Additionally, Joe Locke's Wiccan, aka Billy Maximoff, ended Agatha All Along set to search for his brother, who he brought back to life, with a ghost Agatha Harkness by his side. That could directly tie into VisionQuest's plot, setting up both of the Maximoff twins for Avengers: Doomsday. If Billy does not appear in the show, then with VisionQuest being the final MCU release before Avengers: Doomsday, the chances of Tommy's story tying into the film still exist.
