Iheanacho makes Turkish football history with 10-game scoring streak

Translate

Super Eagles forward, Kelechi Iheanacho continued his remarkable goalscoring form in Turkey on Thursday evening, writing his name into the history books after scoring in a 10th consecutive match to inspire Bursaspor to a convincing 3-0 victory over Muğlaspor at the Muğla Atatürk Stadyumu.

The former Manchester City forward delivered another outstanding performance, scoring twice and providing an assist as Bursaspor claimed all three points, extending his incredible run in the Turkish First League.

After a goalless first half, Iheanacho thought he had broken the deadlock just three minutes after the restart when he headed home following a goalmouth scramble. However, his celebrations were cut short as the effort was ruled out for offside.

The Nigerian international eventually got his breakthrough in the 58th minute, finishing off an assist from Halil Akbunar to put Bursaspor in front and continue his remarkable scoring sequence.

Iheanacho’s achievement has taken him beyond the consecutive-match scoring records of two legendary figures in Turkish football, Galatasaray icon Metin Oktay and former Turkey international Saffet Sancaklı.

Oktay scored in nine successive Süper Lig matches for Galatasaray during the 1962–63 season, while Sancaklı matched that feat with Kocaelispor in the 1995–96 campaign.

Iheanacho had already established a new Bursaspor record before Thursday’s encounter, finding the net in nine consecutive matches to surpass Fernandao’s previous club record of eight successive scoring appearances, set during the 2014–15 season.

The former Leicester City and Sevilla striker was not finished after giving Bursaspor the lead. In the 73rd minute, he struck again, producing a composed left-footed finish from inside the penalty area to double his side’s advantage.

Hüseyin Maldar put the result beyond doubt in the 83rd minute, converting Iheanacho’s assist to complete a commanding 3-0 win for the visitors.

The performance further underlined the Nigerian forward’s influence since arriving at Bursaspor, with his latest contribution taking his tally to 14 goals and three assists in 10 appearances this season.

With his scoring streak now stretching to 10 consecutive matches, Iheanacho is not only delivering consistently for Bursaspor but also rewriting records in Turkish football, giving the Super Eagles striker a fresh momentum as the season progresses.
