1 killed after 2 glider planes collide in upstate New York, police say

One person was killed when two gliders collided in mid-air in upstate New York on Friday afternoon, New York State Police said in a statement.

Police were called to respond to a report of a mid-air collision at around 2:26 p.m. on Friday, the statement said. Just over two hours later, police said investigators discovered debris "in a remote area, off of Sand Lake Road in Edinburg" in Saratoga County.

"Two glider planes collided in the air. One plane landed safely at the nearby Plateau Sky Ranch Airport, and the pilot was uninjured," the statement said.

The pilot of the second plane "was the only person in the aircraft at the time of the collision" and was "discovered deceased at the crash site," police added.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board were notified of the incident and the investigation into the crash is ongoing, police said.
