MAE HONG SON – A local government leader in Mae Hong Son province has condemned Myanmar’s military over airstrikes near the Thai border, warning that the attacks have affected Thai residents, government agencies and border security.

Phongphiphat Meebenjamas, chairman of the Mae Sam Laep Subdistrict Administrative Organisation in Sop Moei district, said Monday that Myanmar’s military airstrike on the Karen-held Saw Lay Tha camp had caused widespread concern among communities along the border.

He called on the Thai government to demand an immediate halt to Myanmar’s military operations near Thai territory and urgently work towards establishing a safety zone along the Thai-Myanmar border.

Phongphiphat said the situation had severely affected trade in Mae Sam Laep, where the local market has become unusually quiet as residents and traders fear further airstrikes.

Local merchants are reluctant to transport goods by boat, while people on the Myanmar side are avoiding crossing the border to purchase supplies because of uncertainty over whether further attacks will occur.

The disruption has left border communities fearful and concerned about their safety, he said.

Despite the tense situation, residents in Mae Sam Laep gathered for a traditional Kathin Buddhist robe-offering ceremony, where they prayed for protection from further violence and danger.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said Thailand had already conveyed its concerns to the Myanmar government through military and diplomatic channels.

He said the Supreme Commander of the Royal Thai Armed Forces and Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow had informed Myanmar authorities on Saturday of Thailand’s concerns over the fighting.

Thailand urged Myanmar to exercise caution and avoid harming civilians, homes and property unrelated to the conflict on either side of the border, Anutin said.
