Translate

EXCLUSIVE: Legendary Entertainment and Hasbro Entertainment’s upcoming Magic: The Gathering movie looks to have found its first big star ready to enchant fans of the popular card game as sources tell Deadline Maya Hawke is set to join the live-action film based on the Hasbro franchise. Hawke’s role has not yet been disclosed.

Legendary and Hasbro will partner to create a live-action feature film and television universe based on the billion dollar brand. Matt Johnson will direct.

While insiders tell Deadline the cast is expected to have an ensemble feel, Hawke’s role is expected to be a key one in the project and unlike a lot of the others roles that will audition, producers made it a priority to get the Stranger Things star the first offer to join the film.

Johnson is also attached to write, alongside Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald.

Launching the genre of trading card games in 1993, Magic: The Gathering has become a cultural engine with an expanding ecosystem of entry points that now spans streaming, digital games, publishing, consumer products, live events, and IP crossovers. The deep lore and welcoming community continue to captivate more than 50 million fans of all ages worldwide.

As the world’s first trading card game, Magic has grown into a global phenomenon, with events and professional play circuits around the world, dedicated conventions attracting tens of thousands of players, and a thriving secondary market for rare and powerful cards. Set across a multiverse of fantasy worlds, the game’s rich mythology continues to evolve through its card sets, novels, and crossover collaborations with iconic franchises including Final Fantasy, Marvel, Star Trek, Dungeons & Dragons, and The Lord of the Rings.

With her hit Netflix series Stranger Things, coming to end last year, the film marks Hawke’s first major role as she sets the next chapter of her career in motion. She will next be seen on-screen in Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games: Sunrise On The Reaping, Graham Parkes’ romantic comedy Wishful Thinking and Netflix’s original series God Of The Woods.

Past credits include critically acclaimed Netflix drama Stranger Things, Disney and Pixar’s Inside Out 2, Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City, Jennifer Kaytin Robinson’s feature Do Revenge, Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Gia Coppola’s feature film Mainstream, and Bradley Cooper’s Leonard Bernstein drama Maestro, among others.
