Walker Hayes Puts On His Puppy Voice for New Song Dedicated to His Dogs: Listen

As a married dad to six kids, Walker Hayes is well-known as a family man, but his family extends these days to his four-legged children as well.

That’s the inspiration behind the country star’s campaign with Canidae Heartland, a new pet food line that pays tribute to America’s Heartland, with “farm-raised nutrition” that supports dogs, American farmers and the environment.

As part of the campaign, Hayes has penned a new song titled, “Love Is a Four-Legged Word,” which celebrates the country star’s bond with his dogs Puckett and Copper, as well as his late dog Skeeter (sample lyric: “He’s my dog and I’m his human”).

The song starts with Hayes’ point of view, before transitioning to Skeeter’s thoughts. “I like it when Walker scratches my belly, I tell him with licks and he throws sticks,” Hayes (as Skeeter) sings. “Just a couple of best buds in the heartland, lending a paw and lending a hand,” continues the chorus to the soft-plucking acoustic ditty, which is surprisingly poignant for a simple song.

Hayes says he originally developed the country-inspired track as a theme song for an animated kids series he’s working on, called Walker’s Woods, but he tweaked it to better fit the Canidae campaign. As the Grammy-nominated singer explains, “If you have a bond with a dog, you just get it.”

But the brand also makes a difference in another way too, donating 1% of every purchase to the American Red Cross, to support “pets, people and communities in need.” The goal: to make sure U.S. towns and neighborhoods are as strong and healthy as the pets who live in them.
