The Lord Of The Rings: Rings Of Power Season 3 - Everything We Know

Translate

Amazon Prime Video triumphantly returned to Middle-earth in 2024 with season 2 of The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power, and now their epic J.R.R. Tolkien adaptation has scored a third season. Set long before the events of The Lord of the Rings, Rings of Power chronicles the Second Age of Middle-earth history and centers on the various kingdoms attempting to stave off the rising evil that will eventually lead to their downfall. Separate from Peter Jackson's legendary trilogy of films (and his Hobbit trilogy as well), Rings of Power offers a fresh take on Middle-earth.

Season 1 of Rings of Power was a taste of what was to come as the true identity of Sauron was revealed, and the forging of the rings began. This set the stage for an even larger sophomore outing, but the show's development languished for more than two years as it faced a myriad of delays. Finally, season 2 arrived in late-summer 2024, and maintained a positive critical reception, even if audience reaction was still mixed (via Rotten Tomatoes). Now, The Rings of Power season 3 is nearly here.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 3 will premiere on Prime Video on November 11, 2026. This premiere will include four episodes launched at once, followed by two episodes releasing on November 18, 2026, and two more on November 25, 2026, totaling eight episodes for season 3.

Not long after the show scored an official season 3 renewal, news confirmed several new cast members joined Rings of Power. Further fleshing out the already massive ensemble, Stranger Things star Jamie Campbell Bower is set to play Galadriel's long-lost husband, Celeborn. This character was reported dead in Rings of Power season 1, though it was clear from Lord of the Rings canon that this couldn't be true. Rings of Power season 3 officially brings Celeborn back into play.

Meanwhile, Eddie Marsan (Ray Donovan) will play a dwarf named Thráin, who is the older brother to Prince Durin IV. This character will reportedly return to Khazad-dûm following the death of their father, which further complicates Durin's efforts to bring their home back from the brink of destruction.

Rings Of Power Season 3 Is Confirmed

Rings of Power season 3 was officially confirmed by the showrunners in late 2024, which was something of a relief, as there were concerns about the future of the show. Initially, an announcement on the third season was expected by October, so when that didn't materialize, fears that the series could be canceled intensified. Despite the fact that season 2, like season 1, received positive reviews, viewership plummeted between seasons (from 150 million to 55 million).

Fortunately, Prime Video eventually also confirmed season 3's development (in February 2025), putting all fears of cancellation to bed for now. Though Rings of Power will be on shaky ground until the show's numbers improve, there will be at least one more outing for the denizens of Middle-earth.

Though not as blood-soaked as contemporaries like House of the Dragon, some of the beloved characters of Rings of Power didn't survive season 2. On the other hand, there are a few characters who will likely be returning, including Morfydd Clarke as Galadriel, as she is essentially the main character of the series. Since Isildur's fate is already known (thanks to the events of The Lord of the Rings), Maxim Baldry is a shoo-in to reprise as well.

The premiere episodes of season 2 have already removed a few names from the potential season 3 ensemble, including Waldreg (Geoff Morrell), who was betrayed by Sauron. The death of Bronwyn was telegraphed by the departure of actor Nazanin Boniadi, but season 2 finally confirmed she succumbed to her wounds. The cast of season 3 has grown with the addition of Jamie Campbell Bower (Stranger Things) as Celeborn. Meanwhile. Eddie Marsan (Ray Donovan) has also joined the cast to play Durin IV's brother, Thráin.

The logline for Rings of Power season 3 reads:

Jumping forward several years from the events of season 2, season 3 takes place at the height of the War of the Elves and Sauron, as the Dark Lord seeks to craft the One Ring that will give him the edge he needs to win the war and conquer all Middle-earth at last.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 3 is confirmed to pick up five years after the ending of season 2. By this point, the War of the Elves and Sauron is in full swing. It's further confirmed that this season is when Sauron will finally craft his One Ring to Rule Them All.

The terrifying Nazgûl of The Lord of the Rings will also rise in Rings of Power season 3. These will be the recipients of Sauron's Nine, though their identities are not yet clear. In this version of the story, Sauron's monsters are called Nazgnagôl, which translates from Black Speech to "Rings-servants." This better fits the monsters at this stage, since they have not yet transformed into wraiths.

Teases ahead of Rings of Power season 3 also confirm that a new Orc character will join the forces of good, or, at least, that's what he claims. The Orc is called Marnûkh and is played by actor Adam Young. Marnûkh is meant to have defected from Sauron in an effort to help the Elves stop the creation of the One Ring. Rings of Power creators J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay call this character an "orc with an arc."

Aside from all this, the trailer for The Rings of Power season 3 makes it clear that this installment will be a lot darker and more intense than those that came before. Sauron is no longer a quiet, manipulative force. Instead, he is an overt Dark Lord desperate to take full control over Middle-earth. At this period of the fantasy world's history, he's about as close to achieving his goal as he can be.
