HBO to release award-winning stage play Oh, Mary! on platform in 2027

Oh, Mary! has become the darling of theatre in the last two years, delighting audiences with its unhinged portrayal of Mary Todd Lincoln as she falls into misery and alcoholism in the weeks leading up to Abraham Lincoln's death.
Written by Cole Escola and now featuring a rotating cast of TV legends as its lead, the dark comedy has become one of the biggest plays in both Broadway and the West End.
Now, the show is hitting screens as HBO announces an original London recording will hit its platforms in 2027.
The film will star Escola as Mary Todd Lincoln and Olivier Award winner Giles Terera as Mary’s Husband, alongside Bianca Leigh as Mary’s Chaperone, Tony Macht as Mary’s Husband’s Assistant, and Michael Urie as Mary’s Teacher.
The special was filmed from an 80-minute performance at the West End's Trafalgar Theatre on 28 July 2026.

Following the announcement, Escola said: "I'm so happy to share this show with a wider audience and spread Oh, Mary! awareness. Knowing about Oh, Mary! is the first step in getting rid of it.”
While director Sam Pinkleton added: "I fell in love with theatre as a kid by absolutely wearing out the VHS tapes of Cats and Into The Woods and I am honoured to continue that legacy with Oh, Mary! on HBO.
"Shepherding Oh, Mary! through its many lives (and Marys) has been an ecstatic experience and I'm giddy that the genius of original idiot Cole Escola will now be immortalized on televisions across America and beyond."
Oh, Mary! opened Off Broadway in January 2024 before transferring to Broadway’s Lyceum Theatre in July, where it became the first show in the theatre's history to gross over $1 million in a single week.

It then transferred to the West End in 2025 where it has now seen the likes of Mason Alexander Park, Catherine Tate, Jinx Monsoon and, next, Lolly Adefope, take on the lead role.
Executive Vice President of HBO Programming, Late Night and Specials, Nina Rosenstein described the show as the kind that stays with you long after you see it.

"It's 80 minutes of meticulously choreographed chaos... so wildly original that everyone who sees it immediately needs someone else to see it too. Cole has pulled off the almost impossible… they created a comedy that feels completely unlike anything else, while making it look effortless."
The official release date has not yet been announced, although you can see Oh, Mary! on the West End stage until January 2027.
