Heatwave in Egypt set to break as temperatures dip next week

The scorching heatwave gripping Egypt is set to break starting Sunday, August 16, as a drop in temperatures takes hold across the country for a week, accompanied by scattered light rain along the northern coast and parts of the Delta, according to the Egyptian Meteorological Authority (EMA).

Ahead of the weekend relief, hot weather continues to prevail along the northern coast, while extremely high temperatures dominate most other regions. Daytime highs in Greater Cairo are expected to reach around 37°C.

For Friday, forecasters report a slight 20% chance of light rain across parts of the northern coast and the Nile Delta (Lower Egypt), with a minimal 10% possibility of brief showers extending to Greater Cairo and the Suez Canal cities.

Wind speeds averaging 30 to 40 km/h are anticipated across most areas, bringing welcome evening relief in open locations. However, these winds may kick up sand and dust in parts of Northern and Southern Upper Egypt, the Western Desert, and sections of the Red Sea Governorate.

Additionally, strong coastal winds will affect beaches stretching from Matrouh through El Alamein, Alexandria, Baltim, Gamasa, Damietta, and Port Said, causing sea waves to rise between 1.5 and 2 meters.
