Thailand prepares UNESCO bid for 150th birth anniversary of Kruba Sriwichai

Thailand’s Ministry of Culture is preparing to submit a proposal to UNESCO to recognise the 150th birth anniversary of Kruba Sriwichai, a revered Buddhist monk associated with Lanna culture and community development in northern Thailand.

Culture Minister Sabida Thaiseth chaired the first 2026 meeting of the committee overseeing the proposal on 15 September at the Ministry of Culture in Bangkok.

The committee reviewed progress on the nomination and examined Annex II, the UNESCO form for the submission of anniversary proposals, along with supporting documents in Thai and English.

The completed documents are expected to be submitted to Thailand’s National Commission for UNESCO in October, ahead of the formal nomination process.

The proposal seeks to highlight Kruba Sriwichai’s contributions to Buddhist teachings, moral and ethical development, community building and the restoration and development of religious sites.

One example cited by the ministry is the construction of a road to Doi Suthep in Chiang Mai through public participation and volunteer efforts without state funding. Kruba Sriwichai was also associated with the restoration of temples and religious sites across northern Thailand.

The committee has conducted research in Thailand, Laos, Myanmar and China and worked with academics and overseas networks to document the broader regional influence of what it describes as the “Kruba Sriwichai way”.

The proposal is linked to two areas of UNESCO’s mandate: social and human sciences, through his role in promoting Buddhist principles and social cohesion; and culture, through community participation in the restoration of temples, historic sites and other public works.

Under the current timeline, the completed proposal is expected to be submitted in October, with the nomination list scheduled to be submitted to UNESCO on 1 December.

The proposal would then undergo UNESCO’s consideration process in 2027. If approved, anniversary activities would be held from January to December 2028 to mark Kruba Sriwichai’s 150th birth anniversary.

The ministry said the initiative aims to bring the story of Kruba Sriwichai’s influence beyond Lanna communities and present his legacy of faith, morality, culture and volunteerism to an international audience.
