UPDATE | Wedela tavern shooting death toll rises to 18

The death toll from the mass tavern shooting in Wedela on the West Rand of Gauteng over the weekend has risen to 18.

Police confirmed that another victim died in hospital, increasing the number of people killed in the attack.

The charges relating to the investigation have now been updated to 18 counts of murder, 18 counts of attempted murder, two counts of malicious damage to property and armed robbery.

Dedicated team investigating

Gauteng police spokesperson Brenda Muridili said a dedicated multidisciplinary team has been established to investigate the shooting.

The team includes experienced murder and robbery detectives, Crime Intelligence officials and Crime Scene Investigation members.

Police are continuing their investigation as they work to establish the circumstances surrounding the deadly attack and identify those responsible.

Victims identified

Muridili said only four of the 18 deceased victims have been identified so far.

Two of the identified victims are South African nationals, while the other two are Lesotho nationals.

“All the injured victims in hospital have been identified,” Muridili said.

According to information provided to police, five of the injured victims suffered gunshot wounds to the upper body and remain in critical condition.

The remaining injured victims are reported to be in a stable condition.

The shooting has prompted a major police investigation, with the multidisciplinary team continuing to gather evidence and follow leads in an effort to track down the perpetrators.

Police have urged anyone with information that could assist the investigation to come forward.

Second shooting

In a separate shooting at the weekend, gunmen killed 10 people and wounded 11 more at an entertainment venue in a township outside Cape Town early on Sunday.

South Africa is awash with legal and illegal firearms, and shootings are common, often fuelled by gang rivalry, extortion and competition between informal businesses.

The country of around 62 million people has one of the world’s highest murder rates, with about 60 people killed each day.
