Singapore Q3 employment growth more than doubles to 27,700

Singapore’s labour market continued to expand in the third quarter of 2026, with total employment growth rising to 27,700 from 11,400 in the previous quarter, according to preliminary data released by the Manpower Ministry (MOM).

In a statement, MOM said employment among both residents and non-residents continued to grow significantly in Q3 compared with the previous quarter.

“Resident employment growth continued to be mainly supported by essential and public services, while growth in outward-oriented sectors remained subdued amid global economic uncertainty.

“Non-resident employment growth continued to account for the majority of employment growth, mainly in sectors such as construction and manufacturing,” it said on Friday.

Nevertheless, the ministry noted that retrenchments edged up from 4,620 in Q2 to 4,800 in Q3, remaining elevated in selected outward-oriented sectors.

“The overall unemployment rate remained unchanged at 2.0% in September 2026,” it added.

Looking forward, MOM said companies will need to continue adapting and investing in their workforce, while workers will need to keep their skills relevant against a more uncertain global outlook and rapid technological change.
