Gavin McKenna Makes Special Toronto Maple Leafs Homecoming Count With Vancouver Canucks Win

Translate

Gavin McKenna got a memorable finish to his first Western Canada road trip with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Saturday's 4-2 victory against the Vancouver Canucks brought the 2026 No. 1 NHL Draft pick to Rogers Arena, where his parents, family and friends watched him play. Growing up in Whitehorse, Yukon, McKenna had visited the arena to watch Canucks games, making this appearance different from an ordinary road game. The 18-year-old also had plenty to take away from the trip, including his first two-goal NHL performance and experience playing alongside different teammates.

McKenna Enjoys Family Support and Adjusts to Different Line Combinations

Having his family in the building made the Vancouver game particularly special for McKenna. Several of his relatives and friends watched from a suite wearing his No. 92 Maple Leafs jerseys.

“It was cool. Obviously, a lot of Leaf fans here as well, so to play in front of my family, came to a couple Canucks games growing up, so to play in that barn and play against that team was pretty cool.”

McKenna also reflected on the road trip, describing it as a solid experience. He enjoyed facing different teams and adjusting to their playing styles.

“I thought it was a good road trip, solid. Playing with a few different lines, so I thought 5-on-5 in the second period tonight was one of my better periods of the year and could have had a couple (goals).”

Against Vancouver, he started alongside Auston Matthews and Jack Roslovic before joining Dakota Joshua and Colton Sissons. McKenna was comfortable with the change and explained that he was willing to play wherever the team needed him.

The young forward also addressed his efforts to reduce turnovers and make better decisions about when to attempt difficult plays.

“That's part of the learning process is learning when to make those plays and I think for me, those turnovers have gone down over the year, so that's something I'm happy with.”

Hiller Likes What He Sees From McKenna

Maple Leafs coach Jim Hiller was pleased with McKenna's work alongside Joshua and Sissons. He particularly liked how often the forward handled the puck in the offensive zone.

“I actually thought Sissons, Joshua and McKenna were really effective. It's probably the most Gavin's had the puck in the O-zone in a game, I would think, with the puck on his stick. He was dangerous.”

Hiller also explained that the combination remained effective after penalties disrupted the line changes, so the coaching staff decided to keep it together.

Toronto finished its four-game trip with a 2-2-0 record. The Maple Leafs beat Edmonton 7-2, lost 5-2 to Calgary, fell 5-4 to Seattle and finished with the Vancouver victory.
