Jakarta rises to 140th worldwide in Global Cities Index 2026

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Jakarta ranked 140th out of 1,000 cities worldwide in Oxford Economics' Global Cities Index 2026, driven by improvements in transit infrastructure, Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo announced on Tuesday.

The Indonesian capital climbed from 287th in 2024 and 159th in 2025 to secure its current global standing. Nationally, Jakarta took first place, followed by Surabaya, Medan, and Bandung.

Speaking at the National Transportation Day event in Kelapa Gading, Pramono attributed the rise to major transit achievements.

"Public transportation connectivity in Jakarta has now reached more than 93 percent," Pramono said, noting that passenger numbers across major transit networks have surged.

"People who previously used private transportation are switching to public transit, with an average increase of over 15 percent."

He added that public enthusiasm for the Kelapa Gading-Manggarai Light Rail Transit (LRT) has remained high following its inauguration.

Transit ridership is expected to expand further once extensions to Dukuh Atas, Jakarta International Stadium (JIS), and the Whoosh high-speed rail Halim Station are completed.

"Once those projects are completed, the main framework of public transportation using the LRT will be properly connected," he said.

The index evaluates 1,000 cities across five main categories: economics, human capital, quality of life, environment, and governance.

Jakarta recorded its strongest performance in human capital, placing 23rd worldwide, and ranked 59th in economics. However, the city placed lower in governance (372nd), environment (553rd), and quality of life (561st).
