Mitchell Starc Unsure Of IPL 2027 Participation, Australia Coach Issues Warning

The growing stature of T20 leagues across the world has made it quite tough for national teams to have players at their disposal at all times. As Cricket Australia gears up for a busy international schedule, its top cricketers could face tough decisions regarding their participation in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Next year's IPL schedule is expected to clash with Australia's jam-packed Test calendar, which includes the historic 150th Anniversary Test against England starting March 11, 2027, and the upcoming Ashes series. Australia's marquee pacer Mitchell Starc has already cleared his situation, suggesting his availability for the IPL 2027 season isn't certain by any means.

Starc confirmed that discussions are ongoing regarding his schedule, though no firm conclusions have been reached. "I've had a few discussions. Nothing's concrete as yet," he said.

Australia's Head coach Andrew McDonald highlighted the challenges of balancing franchise commitments with national duties. Speaking to ESPNCricinfo, McDonald admitted that the IPL's value as a high-caliber T20 tournament that aids player development, but stressed that physical management remains paramount.

"I know people will start talking about the IPL and filling that time. The IPL is part of our management plan for a lot of our players, and to expose our best players in what I believe is the best competition in terms of T20 cricket has its performance benefits as well. You've just got to balance that out," McDonald noted.

With major international events on the horizon-including a potential World Test Championship final, an away Ashes series, and an upcoming World Cup-the coaching staff and medical teams are evaluating workloads, particularly for fast bowlers. McDonald stressed that rest periods are essential for pacers to maintain optimum fitness over long campaigns.

"Country versus franchise and all that... the important part of this period is that we're allowing our fast bowlers to reset their body, get everything in order to give themselves the best opportunity across the 20 or 21 games that everyone talks about," he said.

McDonald, however, is confident of the players' decision-making, noting that their focus remains on representing Australia during key assignments.

Starc was signed by the Delhi Capitals for a fee of 11.75 crore. He only featured in 6 matches for the franchise in the 2026 season due to injury issues.
