Army steps up rehab in earthquake-hit Mindanao towns
CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY — Months after a devastating magnitude 7.8 earthquake fractured communities in southern Mindanao, military forces remain entrenched in the region not for combat, but to rebuild — completing 89 temporary shelters for displaced families in Sarangani province.
Maj. Gen. Alvin Luzon, commander of the Army’s 10th Infantry Division, led an ocular and aerial inspection on Thursday, Sept. 24, to assess the ongoing rehabilitation of disaster-hit towns in Glan, Sarangani, and Jose Abad Santos, Davao Occidental.
Aboard an Air Force Black Hawk helicopter, Luzon surveyed the lingering aftermath of the June 8 tremor, assessing the continuing impacts of landslides, flooding, and damaged waterways.

On the ground, Luzon inspected the “Bangon Glan” rehabilitation initiative spearheaded by the local government. The project, heavily supported by the engineering capabilities and personnel of Joint Task Force Agila and local auxiliary forces, recently marked the completion of 89 temporary shelters for affected residents.
The sustained military deployment aligns with the directive of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to continue assisting disaster-stricken communities well beyond the immediate relief phase. In response, the 10th Infantry Division has maintained its provision of logistical, engineering, and assessment support to local governments.
“Our mission does not end when the ground stops shaking. We stay with our communities as they recover and rebuild,” Luzon said in a statement. “Every shelter completed and every affected area assessed is a step toward restoring safety, dignity, and hope to our people.”
The division pledged to continue its tight coordination with local governments and partner agencies to drive the whole-of-government recovery effort until the affected municipalities fully recover. /das
