Reacher might have started the Jack Reacher (Alan Ritchson) craze, but his successor, Frances Neagley (Maria Sten), is now carrying the torch in her own spin-off series. Following its September 16 debut alongside the Reacher Season 4 finale, Neagley quickly climbed to the No. 1 spot on the Prime Video charts, pushing the original series to No. 2.

Loyal Reacher fans will recognize Neagley as the mysterious private investigator who serves as Reacher’s most trusted confidante and go-to sidekick. But this time, Neagley is the one on top of her own case. When a tragedy hits too close to home, Neagley has to face new demons — not just from her present, but also her past.

What Is 'Neagley' About?

Neagley begins in arguably the most shocking fashion in the Reacher-verse, with a man stripped naked and seemingly under the influence walking toward a moving train in Chicago. Unfortunately for Neagley, she knows the man all too well: it’s her childhood friend, Tommy Crane (Jhaleil Swaby). While authorities have ruled the event a suicide, Neagley believes there’s more to his death. After going through Tommy’s belongings, Neagley discovers that, prior to his death, his last point of contact was someone from the suspicious Echo Canyon Farm.

But Neagley can’t investigate this case on her own. She reluctantly builds her own crew, which includes Chicago PD officer Hudson Riley (Greyston Holt), low-level street informant Keno (Jasper Jones), and technical specialist Renee Birdwhistle (Adeline Rudolph). Even with their support, Neagley must hide the nature of her investigation into Tommy without raising suspicions among local authorities, all while avoiding mysterious assassins sent to kill her. One clue leads to another, and before she realizes it, she finds herself in the middle of a dangerous conspiracy targeting the young, weak, and vulnerable.

Neagley Fights Nothing Like Reacher in Her Own Spin-Off

Unlike Reacher, Neagley is not based on a pre-existing Lee Child novel, but the spin-off is based on details about Neagley that have been mentioned throughout the author's series. Still, Neagley delivers a strong first impression of what the character is capable of on her own. Season 2 of Reacher previously gave audiences a closer look at Neagley’s fighting abilities, especially given her background as a U.S. Army Master Sergeant. Season 3 truly sealed the deal with a scene in which Neagley had to fend for herself when she was ambushed in her office.

Neagley pushes those abilities even further with an equally exciting conspiracy involving cults, mind-altering drugs, and a businessman looking to profit from them. Neagley may not have Reacher’s signature physique, so she can’t rely on brute strength to get through every fight. However, given her detective skills, agility, and ability to use her surroundings, the action in Neagley is a breath of fresh air and much more light-footed than Reacher’s usual bashing and brutality.

‘Neagley’ Finally Addresses Its Lead Character’s Biggest Secret

What makes Neagley all the more interesting is how much attention it gives to trauma. Throughout Reacher, Neagley is portrayed as something of a lone wolf herself; she’s either with Reacher or with her father, with the exception of Season 2’s reunion with her former U.S. Army 110th MP Special Investigations Unit. Considering that her line of work as a private investigator requires absolute discretion, her aloofness makes sense. However, Neagley finally addresses one crucial detail about its lead, which is first mentioned in Child's Reacher book, Night School: Neagley’s haphephobia, which is a fear of touching or being touched by others.

Neagley’s haphephobia isn’t just a random character detail. It shapes the way she works with people outside of her comfort zone and becomes part of the series' main thriller when her condition and suppressed emotions start getting in the way of the investigation. This only gets more complicated with her dying father, whom she has been taking care of since the beginning of Reacher. When Neagley starts digging into the truth about her phobia, not only does she unlock memories about her childhood, but also memories she's long repressed. Featuring a much heavier take on personal trauma, especially coming from a character notorious for burying her feelings, Neagley proves that the spin-off can deliver the same thrills familiar to fans of the franchise without simply becoming a copy of Reacher.
