Could Garrett Wilson Be The Answer To Patrick Mahomes’ Growing Frustration With Kansas City Chiefs?

Patrick Mahomes almost never loses his cool on camera. On Sunday night, he did. The Kansas City Chiefs fell 20-3 to the Seattle Seahawks in Week 7, scoring their first points with 1:42 left in the third quarter and managing 213 yards. Now a former Super Bowl winner has a fix in mind. Russell Wilson believes New York Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson belongs in Kansas City, and ESPN's Adam Schefter says the Chiefs are shopping for receiver help before the trade deadline. Could a blockbuster deal follow? The case is stronger than it sounds.
Why Patrick Mahomes And The Kansas City Chiefs Need A Deep Threat
The numbers tell a harsh story. Kansas City had no red-zone drives, no touchdowns and no pass longer than 20 yards. Seattle pressured Mahomes on 53% of his dropbacks. When Xavier Worthy missed a key catch, the frustration spilled onto the screen.
Injuries made things worse. Rashee Rice is sidelined with a hamstring problem. Tyquan Thornton went on injured reserve after tearing ligaments in his left ankle. Kenneth Walker III has lifted the ground game, but no one stretches the field.
Update: The Jets are not interested in trading WR Garrett Wilson, who they believe is a big part of their future, per league source. https://t.co/SJBvEt3aus

Russell Wilson saw the same gap. On the "Set Hut" show, he said: “As you saw on Sunday Night Football, they were struggling at the Seahawks, everybody was dropping the ball, Patrick Mahomes was frustrated. You don't see Patrick Mahomes getting frustrated too often. He was cussing at the camera. They need a big-time receiver, and Garrett Wilson is that guy.”
Can The New York Jets Afford To Trade Garrett Wilson?
Garrett Wilson has caught 37 passes for 444 yards and three touchdowns this season. That puts him 15th in PFN's WR Impact Score. Still, his last two games brought just six catches for 70 yards, and cameras caught him yelling at quarterback Geno Smith during the Jets' loss to the Miami Dolphins.
He is no ordinary player. The Jets drafted him 10th overall in 2022, and he posted three straight 1,000-yard seasons before a knee sprain cut his 2025 short. Then came a four-year, $130 million extension. That deal makes any trade tricky, and New York has shown no sign it wants to move him.
Schefter did not name Wilson, but his message was clear. “They have been calling around, and I don't think it would be a surprise to see them continue to attempt to add a wide receiver before the trade deadline.”
While Kansas City would have to pay a steep price in picks, and the Jets would have to admit their rebuild around Wilson has stalled. Neither side moves quickly. But the Chiefs host a tough Denver Broncos defense in Week 8, and another stalled offense would only raise the pressure.
