Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand were the only winners from the Indian dugout as host Japan wrapped up the badminton team quarterfinals 3-1 in its favour at the ongoing Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya.
Double Olympic medallist P.V. Sindhu got the contest going, taking on Akane Yamaguchi in the opening tie. Despite losing the opening game, the former World No. 1 ended up claiming the match with a 21-23, 21-18, 21-11 scoreline.
2022 junior world champion Tomoka Miyazaki took only 48 minutes to see off the singles challenge from Unnati Hooda, who lost 21-16, 21-18. This despite Unnati enjoying a 11-4 lead in the second game.
India received a glimmer of hope with Treesa-Gayatri beating Yuki Fukushima and Mayu Matsumoto in straight games with a scoreline of 21-17, 21-16, but Tanvi Sharma was bested comprehensively in the next round by Nozomi Okuhara 12-21, 10-21, to hand the fixture to Japan.
