8 Graphic Novels To Try If You Like Fourth Wing

Graphic novels are a natural fit for fantasy stories, where world-building, action, and character relationships can take on a new dimension on the page. It should be no surprise, then, that Rebecca Yarros' Fourth Wing, will be adapted to graphic novel format next year (arriving April 6, 2027), as the series goes from strength to strength. As well as the release of the prequel series Threshing Day (set for Sept 29, 2026), the dragon-packed fantasy hit is in development for an adaptation at Prime, currently in pre-production.

Fourth Wing has all the elements of a compelling graphic adaptation, from its dragons and brutal training sequences to its romance and high-stakes battles. With the highly anticipated Fourth Wing graphic novel adaptation still six months away, fans of Rebecca Yarros’ series have plenty of time to dive into these graphic novels while they wait.

Subzero

Written and illustrated by Junepurrr

Dragons, political secrets, and a romance complicated by war and politics all lie at the heart of Fourth Wing, and SubZero possesses all three in spades. Clove, the final heir of the Cerulean Dragon clan, agrees to marry Prince Kyro of the enemy Crimson Dragon clan in an effort to end a 300-year war and save her people. But their marriage of convenience proves unable to erase generations of distrust, especially when Clove is hiding a dangerous secret of her own.

Originally a weekly comic on Webtoon, SubZero gives Fourth Wing fans another couple whose attraction could change the course of a war. Oni Press even pitched the graphic novel directly to Rebecca Yarros’s readers, and it’s easy to see why: if Violet and Xaden’s struggle to trust each other kept you reading, Clove and Kyro’s story should be next on your list.

The Hunger and the Dusk

Written by G. Willow Wilson and illustrated by Chris Wildgoose

For Fourth Wing readers who were particularly fascinated by the centuries-old rivalry between dragons, griffins, and their respective riders, G. Willow Wilson and Chris Wildgoose's The Hunger and the Dusk is the perfect next read. In The Hunger and the Dusk, a powerful new enemy throws a centuries-old feud into question. Orc healer Tara joins a group of human soldiers led by Callum Battlechild, prompting both to question where their loyalties lie.

Comprised of 12 comic issues collected into two graphic novel volumes, The Hunter and the Dusk gives readers another war in which old enemies must decide whether they can trust each other long enough to survive, and a romance caught in the crossfire.

Maximum Ride

Written by James Patterson, manga adaptation by NaRae Lee

Maximum Ride was born to fly. Leading her flock of genetically engineered teenagers with the ability to fly with bird-like wings, Max embarks on a push-and-pull battle to protect herself and her found family from the people who created and wish to control them. As Max and the flock journey on, they uncover more and more about how and why they were created, complicating their understanding of who they are and whom they can trust. Like Violet in Fourth Wing, Max discovers that learning to fly is only the beginning; she also has to decide what to do with the truths waiting for her on the ground.More science-fiction than fantasy, Maximum Ride stands as an outlier on this list. But between its nonstop action, man-versus-maker conflict, flight scenes, and the slow-burn romance between Max and Fang, it gives Fourth Wing fans plenty to sink their teeth into.

Sleepless

Written by Sarah Vaughn and illustrated by Leila del Duca

Romance and mystery take center stage in Sleepless by Sarah Vaughn and Leila del Duca. Knight Cyrenic guards Lady Poppy Pyppenia each night, without sleep. When a new king is crowned and an assassin attempts to kill Poppy, the two must uncover who wants her dead while navigating their budding feelings for one another.

Sleepless trades Basgiath War College for a royal court, but Fourth Wing fans will recognize the danger of falling for someone while surrounded by people with secrets. Across two collected volumes, Poppy and Cyrenic’s search for answers draws them closer, even as each discovery gives them another reason to fear whom they can trust.

Squire

Written by Nadia Shammas and illustrated by Sara Alfageeh

Aiza believes becoming a knight will change her life. In Squire by Nadia Shammas and Sara Alfageeh, military service offers her a path to full citizenship after her people were conquered by the Bayt-Sajji Empire. She enters the empire’s competitive squire training program while hiding her background, but the harsh instruction and rivalries among recruits soon give her reason to question the institution she hopes to join.

Fourth Wing readers who loved Violet’s struggle to survive Basgiath will find a similarly demanding training ground here. As Aiza gets closer to becoming a knight, she also begins to see the gap between what the empire says about its war and what it asks of the people fighting it.

Saga

Written by Brian K. Vaughan and illustrated by Fiona Staples

In Saga by Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples, Alana and Marko are soldiers from opposite sides of a galactic war. Falling in love makes them a target for both factions, and the birth of their daughter, Hazel, only raises the stakes. The first volume follows the new family as they flee through a universe full of people determined to pull them apart. While Saga has no plans for an adaptation, it remains one of the best graphic novels of recent years.

Fourth Wing fans who were invested in Violet and Xaden’s relationship will find another romance shaped by a war neither couple started. Alana and Marko have already chosen each other when Saga begins, but the question remains: how long they can protect their love when both sides consider their love a betrayal?

Graceling: The Graphic Novel

Written by Kristin Cashore, adapted and illustrated by Gareth Hinds

Katsa’s extraordinary gift has turned her into a weapon for her uncle, King Randa, in Graceling: The Graphic Novel by Kristin Cashore, adapted and illustrated by Gareth Hinds. Her gift allows her to kill with her bare hands, a power the king uses to intimidate anyone who crosses him. When Katsa meets Po, a prince who can match her in a fight, she joins him in investigating his grandfather’s disappearance. The search leads them toward a secret that threatens far more than either expected.

Fans of Yarros' Empyrean series will recognize a heroine determined to choose for herself how she uses her powers. Like Violet, Katsa has to question the authority that shaped her life while learning to trust someone powerful and challenging. The danger that draws Katsa and Po together also gives readers a romance alongside this political mystery.

Suitor Armor

Written and illustrated by Purpah

Lucia has spent her entire life hiding that she’s a fairy in Suitor Armor by Purpah. As a lady-in-waiting at a human court, she knows discovery could be dangerous while humans and fairies are at war. Then she meets Modeus, an enchanted suit of armor, and an unlikely romance begins to grow between them. The closer they become, the harder it is for Lucia to keep her identity (and her feelings)to herself.

Fourth Wing readers who enjoyed watching Violet and Xaden grow closer while keeping dangerous secrets will find a gentler take on that enemies-to-lovers tension here. Lucia’s romance unfolds against a war that makes her very existence at court a risk.
