Indonesia pushes 100 GW power investment to support net-zero goal

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian government is encouraging 100 gigawatts (GW) of electricity investment and strengthening new and renewable energy (NRE) development as part of efforts to achieve net-zero emissions (NZE) between 2050 and 2060.

Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia said Indonesia remains committed to advancing the transition to NRE despite global dynamics surrounding climate change commitments.

"Indonesia will not budge and will remain consistent in meeting our net-zero emissions target between 2050 and 2060. In the Electricity Supply Business Plan (RUPTL), we are pushing for 70 percent new and renewable energy and adding 100 gigawatts," he said at the opening of Electricity Connect 2026 in Tangerang, Banten, on Tuesday.

According to Bahlil, developing the electricity sector is part of the government's efforts to ensure national energy availability while creating opportunities for collaboration among various stakeholders.

To support the program, investment needs are estimated at US$70–73 billion.

Bahlil also highlighted the importance of mutually beneficial cooperation while prioritizing the use of domestic components.

Support for the national electricity development plan was also voiced by Indonesian Electricity Society (MKI) adviser and PT PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo.

He said the development of national electricity infrastructure includes adding new generation capacity on a large scale through the RUPTL, as well as constructing a transmission network spanning 48,000 circuit kilometers.

Meanwhile, national electricity development still requires stronger collaboration among the government, businesses, academics and investors.

Significant investment and supporting infrastructure are crucial to advancing energy development plans in line with government policy.

Through Electricity Connect 2026, the government is encouraging cooperation among stakeholders to accelerate development of the energy sector.

The forum brought together thousands of delegates, hundreds of speakers and exhibitors from Indonesia and abroad.

The 100-GW development plan and increased NRE share in the RUPTL are part of the government's efforts to strengthen the national electricity system.

Expanding power generation capacity and transmission networks is expected to meet Indonesia's growing energy needs while supporting the country's progress toward its 2050–2060 NZE target.
