Thai customs seize 1,200 packs of matcha worth 853,400 baht

BANGKOK — 8 November 2026, Thai customs officials have seized 1,200 packs of matcha powder worth more than 853,400 baht from two Thai women arriving from Japan at Suvarnabhumi Airport, warning that importers must obtain permits in advance or face an import duty of up to 90%.

The seizure was made on 8 November by officers from the Suvarnabhumi Airport Passenger Control Customs Office in Samut Prakan province. The matcha powder was found concealed in seven suitcases carried by the two passengers, who had flown in from Tokyo.

Officials seized all the products and handed the two women over to investigators for legal proceedings.

The Customs Department said anyone importing green tea or matcha powder must obtain prior approval from two agencies: the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), under the Food Act, and the Plant Quarantine Station under the Department of Agriculture, which checks import conditions and restrictions on plant products.

Under the World Trade Organization (WTO) tariff framework, green tea imports are subject to two duty rates.

Imports within the quota are subject to a 30% customs duty, provided the importer presents a certificate issued by the Department of Foreign Trade. Imports outside the quota are subject to a customs duty of 90%.

The Customs Department advised prospective importers to check the requirements of relevant agencies in advance, prepare all necessary documents and certificates, and accurately declare their goods to customs officials in accordance with import procedures.
