Brandon Sanderson Addresses New Wheel Of Time Adaptation Return

Brandon Sanderson is leaving the door open.

Beloved fantasy writer Sanderson has several adaptations in the works for his many books. With so many new things on the horizon, it's hard to imagine if he has the time to take on new projects. However, fans have been curious about whether the author is open to the idea of bringing The Wheel of Time to the screen.

The author completed Robert Jordan’s epic fantasy book series, The Wheel of Time, following his death. Sanderson said he would love to take part in a future adaptation if the creative team in charge of the project wanted him to help. At the same time, he has acknowledged that his willingness to openly criticize creative decisions made in the previous TV adaptation could potentially complicate things.

However, despite the uncertainty, when IGN asked whether he would want to be a part of another adaptation of The Wheel of Time in the future, Sanderson responded very positively. The author enthusiastically said, “If they want me!” He did acknowledge that the people in charge of the project might feel differently because he had been vocal behind the scenes about changes he did not agree with.

Sanderson has been honest about the challenges of transitioning The Wheel of Time from the page to TV. He has a very deep connection to the series. After Jordan died in 2007, Sanderson was selected to complete the unfinished fantasy saga. His work ultimately resulted in the final three novels, The Gathering Storm, Towers of Midnight, and A Memory of Light.

Sanderson explained that his relationship with the people in charge of Wheel of Fortune's television and film rights is more distant. Sanderson said he has not spoken with the rights holders in several years now. However, he said that his relationship with Harriet McDougal, Jordan’s wife, longtime editor, and her team remains very strong.

The Wheel of Time book series began with The Eye of the World in 1990. Although it was originally supposed to be a trilogy, it ultimately expanded, and the saga now contains 14 main novels, along with the prequel New Spring and several other companion projects.

The Wheel of Time can currently be streamed on Prime Video.
