Serie A | Genoa 1-2 Milan: Cisse and Pulisic revive Rossoneri

Milan surged into an early lead with Alphadjo Cisse and Christian Pulisic, holding off the Genoa comeback to secure a morale-boosting victory at Marassi.
The Grifone were in sparkling form with three consecutive victories, including against Juventus, and had practically a full squad to choose from. The Rossoneri were deeply unpredictable, lurching from defeat to Bologna to winning the Derby della Madonnina to a 2-0 Europa League loss with Ferencvaros on Thursday.
Strahinja Pavlovic, Fikayo Tomori, Matteo Gabbia, Samuel Chukwueze, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Pietro Terracciano and Alexis Saelemaekers were still injured, so Yunus Musah became a makeshift left-back.
Genoa’s last home win against Milan was 3-0 in October 2016, while they hadn’t secured a victory at all since March 2020 at San Siro.
See how it all unfolded on the Liveblog.

Milutin Osmajic almost scored in the opening minute when running onto a long ball over the top, his angle drive shaving a coat of paint off the far post.
Goncalo Ramos also drilled wide after a Johan Vasquez scuffed clearance, and was prevented from tapping in by a desperate Alessandro Marcandalli block from close range.
Milan took the lead when Vasquez was robbed on the right, allowing Adrien Rabiot to roll across for Alphadjo Cisse to sweep in first-time from 14 yards with the inside of the right boot. It was the teenager’s eighth goal of the season in all competition and a great way to celebrate his first senior Italy call-up.

Genoa shot themselves in the foot again for the second goal, as Marcandalli’s weak back-pass was intercepted by Goncalo Ramos, who generously opted to set up Pulisic rather than go for it himself, the American sending Leo Ostigard to ground.
Osmajic had the ball in the net for Genoa on the half-hour mark, but was narrowly offside as he went to nod in the cross from the left, while the Samuel Wiafe strike stung Maignan’s gloves.

Maignan also plucked an Ostigard header out of the air on the Messias cross, but there was tension after the restart when Marcandalli was robbed by Rabiot and brought the France international down for a yellow card. Milan wanted a red, with three members of the coaching staff sent off from the touchline for their protests, but it was practically in the centre-circle and too far away to be considered a clear scoring opportunity.
Vitinha caught Musa napping to surge into the box and sting Maignan’s gloves, then Stephan El Shaarawy’s strike was deflected inches over from 12 yards.

Genoa did get back into it when El Shaarawy’s free kick was charged down by the wall, but Mikkel Ellertsson was quickest to react on the loose ball, beating Maignan from distance with the aid of a deflection off Ardon Jashari.
It was tense to the bitter end, a free kick floated over the top and Kingsley Ehizibue knocking it across the face of goal with nobody able to get the final touch.
