Wa East MP supports 223 JHS graduates with GH¢223,000 bursary

The Member of Parliament for Wa East, Dr Godfred Seidu Jasaw, has provided GH¢223,000 in bursary support to 223 Junior High School (JHS) graduates in the constituency.

Each beneficiary received GH¢1,000 under the MP’s JHS Leavers Bursary Support Programme to help meet expenses as they prepare to enter senior high schools and technical institutes.

Speaking at a ceremony at the Bulenga Traditional Council’s conference hall on September 17, Dr Jasaw said the decision to provide cash rather than items such as mattresses and chop boxes was deliberate.

He explained that many senior high schools in the region already had adequate supplies of such items, while cash would allow parents and students to use the support to meet their most pressing educational needs.

Dr Jasaw said the beneficiaries, who obtained aggregates between 6 and 35, were selected based on their academic performance to encourage them to sustain their efforts and motivate other students to work harder.

He urged the beneficiaries to take their studies seriously and make the most of the opportunity.

MP raises concern over BECE performance

Dr Jasaw, however, expressed concern over the performance of candidates in the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) in the Wa East District.

While acknowledging that poor BECE performance was a national concern, he called on the Wa East District Education Directorate to intensify monitoring and supervision of schools to improve academic outcomes.

He urged the Directorate to restrategise and implement measures to reverse what he described as declining academic performance in the district.

Dr Jasaw also assured the Directorate of his office’s support for circuit supervisors and headteachers through training workshops aimed at strengthening supervision, teaching and learning outcomes.
