The Los Angeles Lakers are going strong this season. They currently stand with a win-loss record of 7-2. The team will face the Portland Trail Blazers in their next game. Ahead of the matchup, head coach JJ Redick was asked a question during the pregame about Luka Doncic. One of the reporters asked for JJ's opinion on how Luka's 3-point shooting has gotten better since the time he joined the Lakers. JJ had a warm response to it.
JJ Redick Explains Luka's Improvement
Responding to the query, JJ stated, “I think the biggest thing is he's in the gym every day shooting. He works. I think he's taking a lot of 3's from the same spots. He doesn't in general shoot a lot of corner threes unless it's like a low clock, out of bounds type thing. So a lot of those threes are above the break.”
JJ explained Luka's consistent routine that has helped him develop his game over time. The head coach further added, “He's made some step back 3's going right, which his bread and butter is the step back going left. And I think at times guys that are really comfortable shooting off the dribble threes can sometimes hesitate on catch and shoot threes.” Redick believed that when it comes to taking a shot, Luka does not hesitate. Concluding his statement, JJ said, “He's shot ready at all times. It's a nice rhythm that he's been in, even going back to last year.”
Luka's unhinged scoring has secured impressive wins for the team. The Slovenian player is currently averaging 38.5 points with 8.1 rebounds and 8.0 assists.
JJ Redick Explains Los Angeles Lakers' Previous Loss To Portland Trail Blazers
This is not the first time in this season that the Lakers are facing the Trail Blazers. In the previous matchup, the Lakers lost by a deficit of 7 points. JJ explained the reason behind the loss, “The one stretch that we didn't score the basketball consistently in that game was the start of the 4th, and we missed wide open catch and shoot 3's versus their zone.”
He further added, “The theme throughout that game, and it showed up in the fourth quarter, was just not being great with our KYP game planning and defense. We said it to the guys today, maybe we just gave them a little too much... simplifying a little bit of the KYP stuff and nailing those details will help our defense tonight.”
